Enjoy stunning lake views with Coniston holiday cottages

Coniston is a village in the Furness area of Cumbria and forms part of the southern Lake District. The village is set between Coniston Water and the hill known as the Coniston Old Man. Steeped in history, which can be traced back to the Bronze Age, and being the setting for the World Water Speed Record (achieved by Donald Campbell on four successive attempts between 1956 and 1959), the area continues to be popular with visitors as a result of the delightful views, pleasant climate and diverse walking which makes the Lake District so beloved.

HomeAway have a number of holiday cottages in Coniston. The village is populated with traditional stone and white walled cottages which blend perfectly with the idyllic scenery. However, visitors are often pleasantly surprised to discover that hiding under the traditional interior are fully equipped self-catering lodgings suitable for groups of all sizes. Kitchens feature modern equipment and facilities such as dishwashers, laundry facilities and microwave ovens whilst lounges have satellite television and internet access. Added to this are welcoming bedrooms and stylish bathrooms with large baths and power showers. Coniston is renowned for having spectacular views over the lake and mountains, and many of the holiday cottages in Coniston feature gardens, barbeque areas and patios where the local sights can be enjoyed during long, leisurely evenings.

Although Coniston has many attractions and events which make it an ideal destination for a holiday or short break, HomeAway offers a number of other equally tempting options. Some of the finest beaches in England lie within easy reach of holiday cottages in Bridlington making them the perfect base from which to explore the East Coast. In addition, why not visit the world famous Alton Towers theme park from holiday cottages in Alton, Staffordshire. The Peak District National Park lies right on the doorstep of Staffordshire, making Alton an ideal destination for those who want the best of both worlds.

Things to do

Walking: One of the most obvious reasons for visiting the Lake District is to take advantage of the many opportunities for walking. For beginners, there are a number of gentle and flatter walks, including those around Coniston Water, whilst those with a little more experience might like to try the Old Man of Coniston which peaks at 2635ft, making it the highest hill in the county.

The Water: Coniston Water is the third largest in the Lake District and has a surface area of 1.9 square miles. There are lake cruises, water sports and swimming for those with the correct equipment and the necessary experience. Swimming is permitted in all areas of the lake but caution is advised due to boat traffic.

Family attractions: There are numerous family activities to take advantage of from holiday barns in Coniston. The Zoo in Dalton in Furness is a short drive, whilst other local attractions include the World of Beatrix Potter, the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, Whinlatter Forest and Brockhole.

Fishing: Coniston Water has pike, char, trout and perch. However, in recent years, it has become more famed for pike than anything else. There is also Estwater Trout Fishery and Fareltonview Fishery within driving distance of Coniston holiday barns. In addition, there are numerous local angling retailers where bait, equipment and licences can be purchased.

Weather

Like many places in the Lake District, Coniston enjoys a mild and wet climate. Rain is prevalent throughout the year and is responsible for the delightful flora and fauna which is typical of the area. While the winter months experience up to 18 days of rain per month, May is on average the driest month of the year with only 11 days of rainfall per 30. During the winter months, temperatures tend to fall within averages of 0.2⁰C to 7⁰C whilst the summer months might enjoy temperatures reaching towards 18⁰C.

Travel

As is the case with many destinations within the local area, travelling to your holiday cottage in Coniston is relatively easy, as the village is very well connected. To arrive by car, leave the M6 at junction 36 and follow the A590, the A5084 and finally the A593 directly into the village. Meanwhile, the nearest train station is in Windermere and there is a regular bus between the two centres.

Great location, great sized property

4 of 5
The house is perfectly located, five minutes walk from both Bowness and Windermere villages, which means it's very peaceful and yet still in a great position. The beds were all comfortable, super soft in fact. Wifi worked well, except in the far corners of the far bedrooms, the heating came on quickly and there is a huge TV in the lounge, with a log burner. The kitchen had all the appliances we needed, including washing machine and dishwasher. I held off on 5 stars as the showers weren't great - adequate but they took a while to get to the correct temperature. That's the only negative point though, and we would definitely come back to stay again.
