Make a Combe Martin cottage your home away from home

If you want to escape to a charming seaside village away from the crowds, you may want to consider holiday cottages in Combe Martin. This lovely North Devon village has something to offer you, whether you’re into hillwalking, downing a few pints at the local pub or simply lazing on the beach. HomeAway offers a variety of accommodation options in this stunning part of South-west England, from lovely rural cottages in the countryside to modern holiday apartments in Combe Martin. The seaside setting means that some rental properties offer sea views, patios or decks for lounging in the sun and barbeque facilities. Certain properties are family or pet friendly with playing facilities for the young ones.

Things to do in Combe Martin

Combe Martin is situated in a narrow valley about 5 miles from the popular resort town of Ilfracombe. The village is built up around a 1.5-mile-long main street that runs the length of the valley to the sea.

-The Wildlife and Dinosaur Park at the southern end of Combe Martin provides for a great day out if you have children to entertain. Here you can see a variety of animal species, including lions, meerkats, otters and even wallabies. Snakes, tortoises and lizards are some of the reptiles found here but the kids might be more interested in the animatronic dinosaurs. The park has several other attractions, including a theme-park type train ride.

-The farmers market is a great place to stock up on provisions for your holiday accommodation in Combe Martin. Held at the Village Hall on the third Saturday morning of every month, the market features local produce like fruit and vegetables as well as artisan breads, cheeses, cakes, chocolate and other delicious goodies. If you’re here in summer, remember to try Combe Martin’s famous strawberries – delicious with locally-produced clotted cream.

-For spectacular scenery, walk along the South West Path to the Hangman cliffs, just east of the beach. There are two cliffs: Great Hangman and Little Hangman. Great Hangman is England’s highest sea cliff and one of the settings in the first of the popular ‘The Saint’ series of books featuring the character of Simon Templar. The walk up Great Hangman is strenuous, but there are easier walks in the area too and on some routes you may even bring your furry friends.

-The Hunting of the Earl of Rone is an uproarious event unique to the village and popular with locals and visitors in Combe Martin holiday cottages. For four days around the Whitsun Bank Holiday, villagers dress up in costume, among them a hobby horse, a ‘fool’ and ‘grenadiers’. They search for a character known as the Earl of Rone, probably based on a real-life person called Hugh O’Neill, the Earl of Tyrone who lived in the late Sixteenth and Early Seventeenth Centuries. On the Monday night, the ‘Earl’ is found. He is then paraded down the main street and taken to the beach, where he is ‘executed’.

-Combe Martin’s pubs are mainly situated along the main street. In the past, the wheelbarrow race during Carnival required contestants to make a pitstop at each pub and down a beer. The way that these friendly neighbourhood meeting places are located is still perfect for a pub crawl even if you don’t have a wheelbarrow. Some pubs are child or pet friendly. One of the most famous establishments is the Pack o’Cards, which dates from 1700 and, like the numbers found in a pack of cards, used to feature 52 windows, 4 floors and 13 rooms.

-Watermouth Castle and Family Theme Park is about 3 miles from most holiday homes in Combe Martin and is a must if you have children. Dating from 1825, the castle houses displays of Victorian furniture and toys. The castle dungeons and surrounding grounds feature theme-park entertainment like a hall of mirrors and various fun rides.

Weather in Combe Martin

Like most of Devon, Combe Martin has a mild climate. In winter, temperatures drop down to about 3 °C while in summer, day temperatures reach a pleasant average of just under 21 °C, perfect for being out and about. Generally there isn’t too much difference between day and night temperatures. While snow is very rare, the village sees much rain throughout the year but more so during the winter months.

Travel to Combe Martin

The nearest train station is in Barnstaple, 9 miles away which is served by routes from Exeter which has an intercity connection to London. There are bus connections from both Barnstaple and Ilfracombe. The village is on the A399 which links to other main North Devon Roads and to the M5.

The perfect family getaway!

5 of 5
We stayed in The Fernery over New Years for four nights. We were three families with four children between us. The standard of the house is exceptionally high and the style and decor of the house is very tasteful and stylish. Beds are extremely comfortable and bedding was of excellent quality and plentiful. The kitchen is well stocked with cooking equipment and utensils, and we were delighted with our welcome gift from the owners which was a lovely surprise. The hot tub is very high quality and easy and an extra luxurious feel to our stay. Communication and transactions are prompt and efficient with the owner which makes life so much easier when booking. We have no negative comments to add, the house was perfect for our needs and hope to return in the future!
