Things to do

-Local history. Cockermouth is a charming old market town, the heart of which has barely changed in centuries. There’s the remnants of a Norman castle that you can visit on set dates, and the 19th Century Jennings Brewery, which is still in operation and open for tours. Famous poet William Wordsworth was also born here in the 18th Century.

-Walking and cycling. On the western edge of the Lake District National Park, Cockermouth is a good starting point for walkers. Hills in the area include Ling Fell, Fell Barrow and Low Fell, which are all attractive challenges. Cyclists can make use of the scenic West Cumbria Cycle Network, much of which follows the course of a disused railway.

-Coast. The Cumbrian coast is also an option for visitors to Cockermouth holiday homes. It’s quick and easy to reach by car and is lined with quaint fishing villages and towns, each with their own fascinating history. Whitehaven for instance, is now a sleepy coastal town, but was once one of England’s busiest ports.

-< strong>Lakes. If you head southeast you’ll come to the many beautiful lakes of the national park. Loweswater is a classic example, bedded in a landscape of tall green hills and protected by the National Trust. You can rent a rowing boat from the shore here. Bassenthwaite Lake meanwhile supports the rare Vendace fish, found only here and in Derwent water.

-Golf. If you’re a golfer then a good way to appreciate the sublime natural landscapes near Cockermouth would be to play a round at the town’s golf course, which has 18 holes amid towering hills – Melbreak, Grassmoor and Whiteside are three mountains that dominate the unforgettable scenery here.

Weather in Cockermouth

Rainfall is relatively commonplace, no matter what time of year you head for a holiday home in Cockermouth. It’s a consequence of the local topography combined with the UK’s maritime climate. Summers here are comparatively cool, bring maximum temperatures in the upper teens or low twenties during the warmest months of the year. Winters though are normally mild – sub-zero temperatures do occur, but average highs in December and January hover around six or seven degrees. Rainfall is consistent, but does fluctuate a little from month to month – the spring months usually get a little less than other seasons.

Travel to Cockermouth

To reach Cockermouth by air you could fly to Newcastle Airport (NCL), which is the closest international airport. This destination has budget domestic flights to and from cities in all parts of the UK, as well as a few in Europe too. The A69 runs almost horizontally across this part of northern England, between the cities of Newcastle and Carlisle. From there you can take the A598 to Cockermouth. You could also head for your holiday cottage in Cockermouth by coach – there are regular services from London Victoria, Birmingham, Carlisle and various other English cities.

Well equipped and clean.

4 of 5
Torpenhow is a very quiet village and it was unfortunate that our stay did not include investigating the immediate area. We did visit the very old church which was amazing. We also visited Bassenthwaite Lake which was beautiful. We were welcomed at a pub in Uldale where the food was good. We drove home through the middle of the Lake District and the scenery was breathtaking. We would love to return and do some serious walking next time.

Peaceful and comfortable accommodation in lovely grounds.

5 of 5
Peaceful and comfortable accommodation with all the facilities that we needed. Very nice and helpful hosts with a lovely welcome pack. Convenient location for the northern lakes which we enjoyed exploring. We also enjoyed watching the wildlife in the garden including a hedgehog and a wonderful variety of birds on the feeders. The fantastic weather was just a bonus!
