Make a holiday cottage in Cheddar your home away from home

Cheddar offers a super rural alternative to holiday apartments in Bristol, while still being only 20 miles from the city. Surrounded by the beauty of the Mendip Hills, Cheddar is a charming village with a treasure trove of amazing sights and attractions. Though it may be most famous for being the namesake of Cheddar cheese, the village tends to attract holidaymakers who are looking to take advantage of the natural surroundings of the region. Cheddar lays claim to an incredible limestone gorge and cave network that is very popular with outdoor adventurers.

HomeAway has a good selection of holiday cottages in Cheddar, converted barns included. Weekly rates for rentals start from as little as £290 and put visitors right in the centre of the dynamic village. Most are either two or three bedrooms, meaning that couples, small groups and families can feel right at home in them. All holiday cottages in Cheddar offered through HomeAway come fully furnished and well appointed with everything a visitor needs to feel right at home. Families with pets will be happy to know that some rentals are pet friendly and come with well-sized gardens.

Things to do

-Outdoor activities: The Mendip Hills, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, lies right at the doorstep of Cheddar. The region is filled with public paths where visitors can enjoy walking and cycling. The village of Cheddar also acts as a gateway to the Cheddar Gorge and Cheddar Caves. The limestone gorge affords visitors gorgeous cliff top views and is a wonderful place to explore. The caves are another great natural attraction that is suitable for visitors of all ages. In addition to sightseeing, adventurers can try rock climbing and caving at this unique site.

-Family attractions: The Cheddar Gorge makes for a great family day out, but if that’s not enough there’s plenty more to choose from in this part of Somerset. Cheddar Crazy Golf is a fun place to spend an afternoon. Families who are snow bunnies at heart can make the short drive to the Avon Ski and Action Centre or the Mendip Snowsport Centre. Both attractions have dry slopes where people of all ages can practice their ski, snowboard, and toboggan skills.

-Food and drink: Cheddar enjoys a rich culinary history. It is of course associated with Cheddar cheese, and visitors can stop by the Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company to see how it is made traditionally. Located in the heart of Somerset, the village of Cheddar is also a great place to sample local ciders. The Gardeners Arms, The King’s Head, and the Riverside Inn are considered to be some of the best pubs in town.

-Golf: The Isle of Wedmore Golf Club is located just five miles south of most holiday homes in Cheddar. The parkland course here has 18 holes and is well suited for the casual golfer. Modest green fees will gain visitors access to not only the course, but a beautiful natural stone clubhouse serving home-cooked meals as well. Six-miles north of Cheddar is Mendip Spring Golf Club, which offers one 9-hole course and one 18-hole course which is also handy enough for golfers who have chosen holiday homes in Weston-Super-Mare.

Weather in Cheddar

Holidaymakers visiting Cheddar from May to October will experience very pleasant weather conditions. High temperatures regularly exceed 20°C from June to September. Lows also rarely dip below 10°C during this time. Even in the winter months the weather remains mild enough to enjoy outdoor activities. High temperatures reach 9°C on average and freezing weather is rare.

Travel to Cheddar

Cheddar is best reached by car. From Bristol, take the A38 through the Mendip Hills and exit onto the A371 at Rosewood. Drivers can follow the A371 until they reach their Cheddar holiday accommodation. Cheddar is located just 35 minutes south of Bristol and 20 minutes south of Bristol Airport. Fantastic stay!

5 of 5
Beautiful property with everything you could ever need. Luxurious furnishings, very comfy beds and an amazing bath. Stayed here for 3 nights, 3 adults and 1 dog. Wish we could have stayed longer. Will absolutely be returning to the property again. The welcome pack was a nice touch. The owner Judith was lovely and very helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. The property is in a great location, near to Wells, Bath, Bradford Upon Avon, Chew Valley Lakes. Beautiful views looking out over the fields. Couldn't ask for any more. Thanks Judith for a great stay.
