Places to holiday in Chagford, Devon

On the northern edge of Dartmoor National Park, discover the unspoilt Devon countryside with views stretching up the side of the moor. Chagford is located amongst this beautiful landscape with an appearance straight out of a storybook. Narrow and winding streets make a path between cottages.

A rich history is evident in the community’s castles and ruins, as well as its granite structures in the village’s public areas and its buildings named after pilgrims who emigrated to the United States centuries ago. Neighboring Launceston also has a nice variety of shops which are frequented by those passing through the southern area of Devon.

Spending time in this village is also entertaining when walking through its village shops which are immediately recognized with a whitewash appearance and wares sitting outside on the sidewalk. This particular community prides itself on selling a bit of everything, including antiques which are also found within the community. Whether discovering fascinating history or taking a relaxing walk through the village’s stores, pub fare is in copious supply within the village as well as a restaurant well known for its six course meal.

A few short minutes outside the city one can find Castle Drogo. This castle is unique because it is considered the last built in the region during its construction in the 1920’s. Many legends surround the church, including the story of a bride fatally shot as she left the church in the 1600’s directly after her wedding.

Several neighboring villages have equally interesting areas to visit. Find the neighboring village of Princetown and its ominous looking historical prison. Known as the worst of its type during the Victorian period the prison served primarily as a place for prisoners of war before being turned over for regular use. It currently operates as a prison with a much improved reputation over its historical days. This is a prison which is in active use.

A little slice of Devon

5 of 5
Well located for East Devon. Just off A38 which makes coast and the moors very accessible. We even headed to Cornwall for a day. Although near the road, Milk Churn is very quiet. Property is very clean, modern and well kitted out. Loads of DVDs for when TV has repeats and you want to get away from depressing news programs. Having the heating on for us after a wet and windy day on Dartmoor was especially welcome. Strongly recommended.

Perfect Couples/ Honeymoon Getaway

We had a lovely warm welcome. The bed was very comfortable and the house was warm and cosy with the fire heating the whole place. The village was a short walk away and was very friendly. A number of lovely places to eat and pubs. Great views and wonderfully peaceful would love to go again!
