The perfect beach holiday begins with a holiday rental home or holiday cottage in Carbis Bay, Cornwall

Carbis Bay is a village close to Lelant and St Ives in Cornwall. The village overlooks a bay around a family beach, which is bordered by Hawke's Point and Porthminster Point. Carbis Bay has a history of mining and fishing and today is a popular holiday destination. The South West Coastal Path runs through the village, as does one of the most picturesque railways in England, the St Ives Bay Line from St Erth.

Places to holiday in Carbis Bay

Carbis Bay has one of the most scenic bays in the world and the whole area operates totally around tourism. This means an enormous range of accommodation including beach houses, luxury flats and fishermen's cottages. Self catering holiday cottages are a good choice for families or as a base to explore Cornwall.

Carbis Bay is only a few minutes from the hustle and bustle of St Ives and cottage holidays are perfect for relaxing on the Blue Flag accredited beach and to get away from it all. Cornish holiday cottages offer high standards for a home away from home experience with the option to eat in or out when you please, whereas mealtimes in a hotel restrict your day somewhat.

There are three wrecks on the beach of Carbis Bay that make a pleasant short stroll before your breakfast in a holiday cottage. Alternatively the Carbis Bay Hotel's restaurant is open to non-residents.

Things to do in Carbis Bay

From shopping to sightseeing, surfing to golfing, walking to wildlife and horse riding to heritage sites, whatever your interests, you're sure to be spoilt for choice when you take a holiday rental home in Carbis Bay. It has so many places to see, attractions to visit, splendid natural scenery and many visitors find the areas beaches suffice.

The beach at Carbis Bay is sheltered and the sea is calm and well suited to wind surfing and waterskiing. St Ives harbour is a suntrap; just the place for sunbathing and the longest beach in the area at Porthminster is sandy, sheltered and safe for swimming. The beach cafe has an exhibition by local artists. Porthgwidden Beach also offers safe swimming and Porthmeor is the best surfing beach. Other beaches to explore from your cottage include Porthkidney Sands, The Towans and Hayle Towans.

Neighbouring St Ives is a picture postcard town with cobbled streets and quaint shops and alleyways, visit the Tate Gallery or the Barbara Hepworth Museum and try out the local specialities such as marinated pilchards, Cornish pasty, clotted cream teas, saffron cake, heavy cake and Cornish ice-cream. If the weathers not good where you are, or you want to travel further a field, then consider Flambards at Helston, the Eden Project at St Austell, Lands End, Dairyland Farm World and Newquay Zoo, The Cornish Cyder Farm at Penhallow or the National Seal Sanctuary at Gweek.

Weather in Carbis Bay

Carbis Bay's climate is influenced by the Gulf Stream and as the bay is sheltered it is suitable for holidays all year round.

Travel to Carbis Bay

Newquay and Plymouth airports serve Carbis Bay, as do the ports of Falmouth and Plymouth. The St Ives Bay railway station is above the beach and connects to the main line to London Paddington. There is a park and ride at Lelant Saltings.

Loved this apartment for the week, it's got everything you need and close to the beach and train which takes 2minutes to get into St Ives. The hill down to the beach is steep but we needed some exercise after eating in the great restaurant on the beach.

                                      Lovely St, Ives apartment.

                                      4 of 5
Apartment was roomy, clean, well-furnished, lovely views, everything provided. Detailed instructions very helpful. Excellent location for walking to town (restaurants, museums) and beaches. Enjoyed St. Ives, especially the Barbara Hepworth museum, and an enjoyable meal at the Mermaid Inn (not as expensive as feared). Weather not great, so walking curtailed, except on the last day down at Land's End - lovely cliff views.
