Make a holiday cottage in Bude your home away from home

Excellent surfing beaches and endless hours of sunshine make Bude a popular destination for surfers, families, and couples seeking the quintessential summer holiday. Bude is made up of a cluster of lovely villages full of rustic old-world charm with plenty of places to explore. Similar to other villa holiday destinations in North Cornwall, visitors to Bude can walk down to any number of golden beaches to enjoy surfing, sea kayaking, and other watersports, or simply enjoy the scenery.

HomeAway has a great selection of holiday cottages in Bude to choose from, ranging from cosy nooks to sprawling estates. Most of the homes have three, four, or five bedrooms and start at £380 per week. They all come fully furnished and are very well appointed. Many holiday cottages in Bude even offer added amenities like access to a swimming pool, tennis courts, and BBQ facilities.

Things to do

-Beaches: Summerleaze beach is just a five-minute walk from the centre of Bude. Flanked by a river on one side, the soft sand dunes of Summerleaze make it a popular beach for families. Three miles out of town, Northcott Mouth is another family-friendly spot with plenty of rock pools to explore. Dogs are also welcome here. One of the most popular beaches in the area is Widemouth Bay, which actually splits into two beaches and attracts sightseers as well as surfers.

-Watersports: Bude lies at the centre of several notable surfing beaches. Crooklets Beach and Widemouth Bay are both known for their consistent swells and are very close to many holiday homes in Bude. In addition to surfing, the beaches surrounding Bude are also well suited for kayaking and open canoeing. Holidaymakers without watersports experience can take lessons from one of any number of surf schools located in the area.

-Family attractions: Families with small children can enjoy safe leisure swimming at The Splash, located right in central Bude. The facilities include a large wave pool and waterslides. A short drive from Bude is the Milky Way Adventure Park. Great for a family day out, the park has rides, live shows, and a large play area for kids. Though it is a bit of a drive, it’s also possible to visit the Eden Project. The eco-friendly bio-domes here are Cornwall’s most visited attraction. If you want to be especially close to the Eden Project, HomeAway offers a selection of holiday homes in St. Austell.

-Golf: It isn’t just surfers who choose holiday cottages in Bude; golfers find their sport too. Bude and North Cornwall Golf Club lies on the outskirts of the village. The 18-hole course here was founded in 1891 and is open to visitors year-round. A little further away, the Ivyleaf Golf Course and Driving Range is an excellent place for a casual round of golf. It features a 9-hole parkland course with spectacular views of the coast and Cornish countryside.

Weather in Bude

Holidaymakers seeking sunshine will want to visit Bude from June to September, when high temperatures exceed 15°C and rain is rare. The winter and spring months are chilly, but still pleasant enough to enjoy outdoor activities and golf. Rain is more common in the colder months, though it is rarely heavy.

A Wonderful Home-from-Home for a Family Christmas

5 of 5
Nine of us, accompanied by 2 Cocker Spaniels, descended upon Beach House for 8 days. I am pleased to say that we had a marvellous time, the house providing a welcoming, warm, comfortable, spacious, well-equipped, and spotlessly clean setting for our traditional Christmas family reunion in Cornwall. Our worries prior to arrival were that: the house would not be warm enough as it contained only night storage heaters, portable heaters, and the living room wood burner; the stairs would be difficult to climb for the 3 members of our party aged between 83 and 92; the house lacked an internal downstairs WC; the oven(s) would be too small for the turkey, and there would be insufficient equipment in the kitchen; the Wi-Fi signal would be too weak. I am delighted to report that all of these worries were unnecessary: we were not cold – very quickly after our arrival, the house warmed up, stayed warm, and we were very cosy; our elderly family members, 2 of whom walk only with sticks, had no difficulty climbing the stairs, as the treads were wide, and the bannister was firm; at times the house was so warm that it was actually very refreshing to use the courtyard WC; both ovens were extremely efficient, the main oven was very large, the kitchen had everything that you could wish for, and the walk-in larder was an absolute boon; the medium-sized local Sainsbury’s store was a 10-minute walk away, and large supermarkets – Waitrose, Tesco, Marks & Spencer – were short drives away; the Wi-Fi signal strength was good throughout the house. The layout of the house was perfect for a large family Christmas, and the house was attractively decorated, including with a Christmas tree and tasteful decorations.  There were also some beautiful original artworks and old local photographs on the walls. The view from the living room of the beach and the waves was stunning. Oh, and with regard to our 4 cars – there was ample parking in front of the house, and Jo gave us 2 permits for the car park - a 2 minute walk from the house. Jo, herself, was a perfect owner – unobtrusive, but coming to check the day after we arrived that all was well with our accommodation. Finally, we loved Bude, and its range local shops. In summary, Beach House was a wonderful place to stay for Christmas, and we would be delighted to stay there again!

2nd great stay in a lovely house in a fab location

5 of 5
Our 2nd stay at this house and it didn't fail to impress again. The house is great for a large group with plenty of communal space and good size bedrooms. The property was clean and tidy with tasteful Christmas decorations and a lovely welcome pack. We had an issue with the dishwasher but Nick was straight out to see if he could help (given the time of year it was tricky to get a technician) which was much appreciated. The location is perfect, once you arrive you don't need to get back in the car. Cots and highchairs were provided and there is a stair gate at the top of the stairs. The garden is all enclosed so a great little extra space for the kids to burn of some energy. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Down House Already booked to go back for our 3rd visit!! Thanks again for a great stay
