Enjoy a relaxing break with a holiday cottage in Brecon

Brecon is a market town in Mid-Wales. It is the third largest town in Powys and sits in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park, with the rolling hills visible from most points. It has a rich history which can be traced back to Roman times when it was used as a Cavalry Base. Many monuments and listed buildings remain in place and are just one of the many attractions. In addition, the town has a military presence and is home to the Gurkha Company and the 160th (Wales) Brigade.

HomeAway has a selection of holiday cottages in Brecon which cater for both groups of friends and families alike. Children and pets are welcomed in many of the offerings, with parking and garden facilities being in plentiful supply. Guests are free to make use of the modern appliances available, including laundry facilities, dishwashers, Wi-fi and satellite television. Many of the Brecon holiday barns are also suitable for large numbers meaning that walking and climbing groups have a wide selection to choose from.

The various outdoor pursuits make Brecon the ideal location for those looking for fresh air and boisterous activity, but away from the Brecon Beacons, there are seaside resorts and bustling cities to be explored. Prestatyn is a firm favourite for families seeking a traditional seaside holiday, and HomeAway has a number of delightful holiday cottages suitable for families of all sizes, whilst Newport is a traditional Welsh city with a cosmopolitan twist, offering a number of holiday homes.

Things to do

History: With such a rich and lengthy heritage, it’s little surprise to learn that holiday cottages in Brecon are within easy reach of a vast number of fascinating historical attractions. These include the famed Cathedral and attached heritage centre, the South Wales Borderers Museum, the Brecknock Museum and the Regimental Museum of the Royal Welsh. In addition, there are a number of buildings and relics of particular historic interest.

Family attractions: Brecon sits on the River Usk which offers a variety of family friendly activities, including river cruises and canoeing. The town is also situated for close proximity to the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal which has a number of barge cruises suitable for guests of all ages.

Local Market: Brecon has been, for many years, the home of the famed Brecon Livestock Market where livestock of all pedigrees may be purchased. In addition, the sight of the market is a fascinating one which continues to captivate. The market recently moved from the centre of town to a dedicated site in the former industrial area in the West-end.

Outdoor activities: The major reason for visiting the Brecon Beacons is for the numerous outdoor activities which take place within the country park. Walking, climbing, orienteering and cycling may be organised personally whilst there are a number of private activity centres offering wider pursuits such as potholing, rock climbing, caving, pony trekking and paragliding.

Weather

The Welsh climate is known for being wet and windy, and visitors can expect an average of 15 days per month of rain with an average 75mm of rain falling. The winters tend to be cold and snow is extremely common with 2-3 days of snowfall every month. However, in the summer temperatures of up to 20°C are common. Guests visiting Brecon holiday barns, especially those who expect to take to the higher altitudes, should ensure they have protective clothing.

Travel

There are many ways to get to Brecon. By car, the best way to reach Brecon is by following the A470 from Hay on Wye. Hay is easily reached from all directions. Those coming in from the North and the Midlands should approach via the M54 from Telford, whilst those coming in from the South would be advised to use the A440 from Gloucester to Ross on Wye. From there, Hay is a short journey via the A49. Meanwhile, those travelling by public transport can get a regular train into Abergavenny or a coach service to Abergavenny, Cardiff, Neath or Swansea where public buses are available to complete the journey.

Serene and Beautiful property. Fully recommended for someone looking to spend peaceful time. Car is a must. Ensure you reach during day light as the house is very difficult to find in the dark. We enjoyed our stay here to the fullest.
