Things to do in Bovey Tracey

Bovey Tracey gets its name from the Bovey River and the Tracey Family, who during the Norman Conquest in the 1300s, became Lords of the Manor. Bovey Tracey has a exciting and dramatic past and was once a thriving Saxon community. Today, it is a small town with a large village feel and a sense of peace and tranquillity with a gentle community spirit, where much pleasure comes from its beautiful setting. Bovey Tracey holiday rentals are in the perfect location, allowing you the freedom to explore the countryside, amble down to the town square or to simply sit back, relax and do nothing at all

-Bovey Tracey Town Trail is a delightful 90 minute walk around the town picking out 40 points of interest. The tour includes Cromwell’s Arch which is the remains of a 12th century monastery, the bridge built in 1642, St. Mary’s Well, Courtenay House, Church Steps and the now closed but fully restored railway station.

-Bovey Tracey Farmers Market is a must visit every other week and is held in the town’s Union Square. As food culture features more in our holidays, the market takes prominence for stocking up Bovey Tracey holiday homes with provisions. Accompanied by lively jazz bands, take the pick from the best local produce and handmade foods. Occasionally a craft market joins the food stalls.

-The Dartmoor National Park is an area of outstanding natural beauty and a real nature lover’s paradise. Beautiful enough to attract the attention of Hollywood film makers, many people come from all over, choosing holiday cottages in Bovey Tracey to experience the beauty, walk in the trails, cycle and hike in the surrounding countryside. You can go horse riding, kayaking or just enjoy a picnic in the arms of Mother Nature.

-The Hound Tor and Hundatora: Hound Tor is just outside of Bovey Tracey and is a massive granite outcrop that almost looks like dogs assembled on a cliff face peering down at you. It is a stunning example of the force of Mother Nature, as the granite cliff face has been severely weathered. Hundatora is the remains of a completely abandoned medieval village that is believed to have been deserted in the 1300s. It is in close proximity to the Hound Tor, south east of it to be exact. The village was excavated during a painstaking process that took 14 years and was completed in 1975. There are 4 Dartmoor longhouses as well as some smaller barns and houses as well. Many of the dwellings show central drainage channels and there were 3 barns with corn dryers used for grain storage as well.

-The Canonteign Falls is located within the Dartmoor National Park and is a hugely popular sight for families looking for the perfect day out. Home to the highest waterfall in all of England – all 220 ft high, The Canonteign Falls is a stunning place to enjoy the fresh air and countryside with lots of little pools, and smaller waterfalls, walking paths and a secret garden and fern garden. Kids and parents can enjoy a brisk walk then relax at the restaurant and play area.

A magical place in a wonderful part of the English countryside

5 of 5
We had the most wonderful week here. The Cow Shed itself is a spacious, well-appointed and comfortable base for a holiday, we loved it. Everything works, the spaces are beautiful inside and out - comfortable sofas and bed, cosy 'sun trap' walled garden and a balcony to chill out on - great for breakfast or an evening tipple! Wendy and Mark are the perfect hosts, friendly and knowledgeable about the area - nothing was too much trouble and they made us feel very welcome. This really is a fantastic base from which to explore Dartmoor and the surrounding areas. We stayed for a week and barely scratched the surface. We loved walking, exploring, climbing tors, seeing the wonderful wildlife, swimming in the crystal-clear river pools and cycling along the Granite Way. There are wonderful places to eat and drink, cream teas in abundance and too many stunning country pubs. We were blessed with the weather which was a bonus. We will definitely be coming back to the Cow Shed and recommend it and the owners without hesitation.
