Make a holiday home or self catering house to let in Bideford, Devon your home away from home

Sitting on the banks of the Trowbridge Estuary is the pretty little town of Bideford. Houses to let in Bideford, Devon are a charming place from which to base your exploration of both Devon and Cornwall, being located right on the boarder of the two West Country counties.

Things to do in Bideford, Devon

Family holidays to houses to let in Bideford, Devon are fantastically catered for. The local beaches, including the famous Westward Ho! beach and the magnificent surfing beach at Saunton Sands, offer not only great sunbathing, swimming and sand castle building opportunities, but also a great range of water sports. Surfing is particularly popular in the local area, and there are plenty enough surf schools from which to learn the sport. The “Big Sheep” centre, (which is not simply a giant sheep as you might see in the famous giant sculpture series in Australia), has a great range of activities too, from mountain boarding to sheep racing. There is even a Big Sheep Brewery to keep adults entertained!

Walkers and cyclists staying in a self catering Bideford flat for rent will be delighted by the ease with which you can access the famous Tarka Trail. The trail follows the line of the old railway, which passes right through the town, and right past most Bideford houses to let. Lundy Island, which lies some 10 miles off the coast, is a fantastic daytrip from houses to let in Bideford. The island is a nature reserve, and well worth taking the MV Oldenburg to.

Of all the things to do in Bideford Bay, the Bideford Folk Festival is one that really brings the town to life. The festival lasts a whole week in mid-August, with music, dancing and good food to enjoy. There is also a large regatta in September, as well as huge celebrations at New Year, when the entire town is clad in fancy dress, ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous!

Places to visit on holiday in Bideford, Devon

The stunning little whitewashed village of Clovelly, probably the most photographed village in the West Country, is easily accessible from a self catering Bideford property. Built along narrow, cobbled streets which climb steeply up from the harbour, provisions have to be bought into the village on sledges, which simply adds to the already enormous charm.

Travel to Bideford, Devon

Bideford is a remote town on the Devon coast, and therefore by far the best way to reach a self catering Bideford house is by road. National Express do provide regular services from London Victoria, but if you are staying, you would be advised to have the use of a car anyway in order to really get the most from your holiday in the area.

Wonderful in every way!

A perfect location, fantastic views, really well equipped and great communication with the owners. We stayed for two nights so that I could run the Bideford Half Marathon and it took a lot of the stress out of the experience of getting towns from the race. Plus we had a fabulous second night in Bideford post race! We loved the cottage style and layout, the personal touches and how well equipped it all was. Thank you so much!

We've really enjoyed our week here in this cottage. The cottage is quaint, and just perfect for a family of four (we have two boys, 9 and 11). We brought our dog, who's only little. We brought our own stair gate (there is one at the bottom of the stairs), but that was mostly to make sure at night that he didn't jump on the furniture. The Orangery itself is really lovely, and the sitting area is just great for a family to play a board game, should it be raining. The best feature is the location. It's within walking distance of Morrison's (but there's a steep hill so you may still want to drive), and easily within reach of Westward Ho! and other beaches in the area. Can't recommend this cottage enough. We met David, and he was super lovely to us for the entire stay, and had lots of hints and ideas for things for us to do. It was nice to be somewhere in Devon where a mobile phones worked too (we're on Vodafone, and got 4G!). It is possible to work from this cottage. Our tips: Bring a slow cooker. It's great when you've been out all day, and your dinner is waiting for you. Bring a travel stair gate - because it helps to keep your dog in the corridor to the bathroom / airing cupboard. Bring an Amazon Fire Stick - because the internet is fast enough to support streaming.
