Things to do in Berrynarbor

Berrynarbor has a long history, dating back to the 13th century – it takes its name from William Nerbert de Beri, who was Lord of the Manor here in 1196, and the village church can also be dated back to that time. In the Victorian era, writer Beatrix Potter was a regular worshipper in the church.

-Explore Berrynabour: Today Berrynarbor’s residents pride themselves on their village’s beauty with floral displays in every garden and quirky flowerpot men found hanging from trees and drainpipes. The beauty of Berrynarbor has helped it become a regular winner of the Britain in Bloom and Best Kept Village in Devon competitions in recent years. The village’s 17th century pub, Ye Olde Globe, is the ideal spot to sample Berrynarbor’s fabled hospitality.

-Discover North Devon: Selecting Berrynarbor holiday cottages will provide the perfect base from which to explore North Devon. Nearby Combe Martin is England’s longest village, stretching almost two miles inland from the sea. This traditional fishing village has a remarkable history of maritime trading, strawberry farming and silver mining. Visit the interactive museum to learn more about this fascinating place. Rock pooling and kayaking are among the most popular activities in Combe Martin, while fans of fishing – either sea or coarse – can enjoy the sport here.

-Watermouth Cove: Enjoy more of the delights of the coast, the sheltered harbour and rocky shoreline at this delightful cove. It’s a great place for all ages. Watermouth Castle, with its dungeons, maze and rides, is a terrific family attraction.

-The Beaches: Hele Bay Beach, about 40 minutes’ walk from most holiday rentals in Berrynarbor, is a small sheltered cove with a ‘blue flag’ beach, recognising its clear, clean waters. Ilfracombe – the largest town in the immediate area – is a pretty resort and harbour town and Tunnels Beach is a unique attraction. A series of hand-carved tunnels lead to lovely sheltered beaches and a Victorian tidal bathing pool.

-The Great Outdoors: Walking is one of the best activities around Berrynarbor – the South West Coastal Path runs through the village and is a marvellous way to enjoy North Devon’s ruggedly beautiful scenery. Morte Point is a bit of a climb but worth the effort, offering stunning views of the coast. And also close enough to holiday cottages in Berrynarbor, Exmoor National Park, with its famed ponies and amazing landscape, simply begs to be explored, either on foot or on horseback. Cycling is another terrific way to see North Devon – the National Cycle Route has a scenic, circular route starting and ending in nearby Ilfracombe. When you’re there, indulge in fish and chips or a cream Devon tea.

The weather in Berrynarbor

The climate of Devon is a mild one with warm summers and mild winters. Rainy spells are frequent, however, and because of its mix of coastline and moorland, the weather can be changeable no matter when you visit. The coast is generally sunnier than the moors where mists and fogs can come down in minutes so before you leave your Berrynarbor holiday accommodation, be sure to check the local weather forecast.

Getting to Berrynarbor

Berrynarbor is easily reached by road with the M5 linking the county to the rest of the UK. There are regular train and coach services with Ilfracombe well served by public transport.

Our stay at Margarets Cottage

5 of 5
We stayed at Margarets Cottage with the family and dog. The Cottage is lovely, very homely. The views were amazing and we enjoyed some lovely walks around the Quay and by the Church. We will most definitely be going back again

Absolutely fabulous.

Amazing property, everything you could want including a sea view, yes a real sea view, we have come across so many who said this was there and it was not, this time, we could drink beer, too much I know, and watch the sun set over the ocean and it was really there. Amazing.
