Make a holiday cottage in Ashbourne your home away from home

The Derbyshire market town of Ashbourne lies on the southern edge of the Peak District, and it hasn’t really changed much since the 18th century! A historical location with over 200 listed buildings, coaching inns, and town houses, many famous people have played a part in its past including George Eliot, Thomas Moore, Izaak Walton, James Boswell, and Prince Charles Edward Stuart. Queen Victoria also rested at the Green Man Inn as she was passing through in 1832. HomeAway has a varied selection of rental accommodation here, including Ashbourne holiday cottages and farm houses. Many offer BBQs, country views, internet access, and neat, colourful gardens. All of the holiday cottages in Ashbourne are decorated and furnished to a high standard to ensure a home-from-home feel.

Things to do

-Historical attractions: Ashbourne’s history is best experienced by walking along its alleys and visiting the Georgian buildings; the wide Church Street boasts some of the finest in Derbyshire. Church Street is also home to St Oswald’s Parish Church, a stunning piece of architecture built in 1160. Its 212-foot spire was constructed in 1340, and George Eliot called it "the finest single spire in England". The church looks particularly beautiful in the spring with its displays of colourful flowers. There are also a wealth of country estates and homes in the area such as Sudbury Hall, Kedleston Hall and Tissington Hall. All of the stately homes have beautiful gardens to enjoy, and an abundance of history inside and out. All are open for public tours.

-Outdoor pursuits: Walking is a great way to explore the open countryside with miles of traffic-free footpaths to walk along. There are routes with terrains to suit all abilities, so everyone can enjoy the hills, dales, and fresh air. There are also wonderful walks through the market town itself.

-Shopping: Visitors in Ashbourne holiday homes are bound to be attracted to its shop-lined streets. With a market twice a week you can be sure to sample some local produce and get some great bargains, too. The town itself is host to high street names, boutique and independent shops, and impressive antique stores.

-Entertainment: Relaxing in local pubs is a common pastime for people staying in Ashbourne holiday cottages. There are around 12 pubs in the town, many of which have previously been alehouses or inns and retain their cosy charm to this day. The Green Man is possibly the most famous of the local pubs, built in 1750 and visited by Queen Victoria when she was a princess. You will also find the Green Man in the Guinness Book of Records with it having the longest inn name in history (The Royal Green Man and Blackamoor's Head Commercial and Family Hotel!). Visit the pubs for excellent home-cooked food and local brews.

Weather in Ashbourne

Ashbourne’s summer temperatures can reach highs of up to 22°C, and it can feel quite warm in the town centre. The summer months are a great time for booking holiday accommodation in Ashbourne, especially for visiting the stately homes as it is when their gardens are in full bloom. The winter months can get quiet chilly but are perfect for nipping in and out of shops and keeping warm in cosy pubs.

Travel to Ashbourne

Ashbourne sits midway between the M1 and M6 motorways and there are many A roads which lead to Ashbourne and follow a scenic route through the countryside. There is no train station in Ashbourne, but there is one in Derby which is just a short bus ride away from the town. The nearest airport is East Midlands.

Beautiful, clean, well equipped accommodation in a lovely quiet area.

5 of 5
We stayed here for 4 nights in July. The accommodation was first class, very clean and very well equipped. Room outside to park car and we also enjoyed eating in the garden at the picnic table. The kitchen has everything you need and the beds were comfortable. The bathroom was lovely and clean. Only about 20 minutes from Alton Towers. We also visited lovely gardens at Stoke on trent and Peak Wildlife Park. We have 2 girls aged 5 and 2 and they loved it. The only one thing we missed was not having Wi-Fi but everything else was wonderful.

Ideal location for attending a wedding at Hargate Hall

5 of 5
Having been invited to attend a wedding at the adjacent Hargate Hall, we couldn't have asked for a better base for our weekend stay. The Potting Shed is literally a few minutes' walk from the Hall, and yet enjoys its own peace and quiet - with wonderful views thrown in! Fiona and her husband couldn't have been more helpful, ensuring that our stay was absolutely perfect. They even fixed the sunshine for us!! The Potting Shed itself is a lovely little cottage and I'm sure we'll be back for a 'proper' holiday before too long.
