Make a holiday cottage in Alderholt your home away from home

Nestled near the western border of The New Forest National Park, the small village of Alderholt sits in the midst of an area filled with natural beauty. As an outdoor haven, Alderholt attracts active holidaymakers from across the UK seeking respite from the city and a breath of fresh air. The village is typically English with three churches, a convenience store, surgery and pub. There’s also a pet store if beloved Fido is making up the party! With a lovely choice of accommodation in the area, as well as holiday cottages in Salisbury nearby, visitors can create their ideal holiday in Dorset or Wiltshire.

HomeAway's selection of holiday cottages in Alderholt are available from £233 per week, range from one to three bedrooms, and can sleep two to six people. Furnished with everything visitors would need to feel right at home, some of the cottages feature additional amenities like washer/dryers and internet access. Many Alderholt holiday cottages also welcome pets, making the perfect place for a family getaway.

Things to do

Dozens of well-known paths crisscross the heathlands and forest of this national park and are ideally suited for walking, cycling, or horse riding. Cycle hire, vehicle hire, and horse riding stables are widely available in The New Forest. Visitors exploring the park will no doubt run into its most famous residents, wild ponies, along the way.

Go Ape, an outdoor adventure destination, is six miles from Alderholt in Ringwood. The park includes an exciting treetop walkway and Segway tours. A little further in Newtown, families can spot spotted deer at the Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary. Finally, parents with younger children won’t want to miss a trip to Peppa Pig World in Romsey.

-Historic attractions: Alderholt is surrounded by historic villages and towns. Lyndhurst, considered the capital of The New Forest, is half an hour's drive away from most Alderholt holiday cottages and boasts a high street full of historic half-timbered and thatched roof buildings. A bit further from Lyndhurst, the extraordinary village of Beaulieu is also a wonderful place to visit. Its main attraction is the Montagu Palace House and Beaulieu Abbey, which date back to the 13th century.

-Museums: The Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum is located just nine miles from the centre of Alderholt and is home to an impressive collection of archaeological artefacts from the surrounding area. Popular parts of the museum include exhibits on Medieval Salisbury, Stonehenge and Prehistory. The museum is open year-round and is an excellent family destination situated well within reach of Alderholt holiday cottages.

-Food and drink: Churchill Arms is the village pub in Alderholt, and welcomes locals and visitors alike. Visitors headed to The New Forest will encounter numerous charming local pubs and restaurants in the historic villages of Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst (which also has a lovely selection of holiday cottages), and Burley. Along with traditional pub fare, tourists always enjoy the locally sourced cider and ice cream, especially in the summer months.

August is the driest and warmest month, with highs reaching into the 20s. Pleasant conditions well suited to walking and other outdoor activities last from April through October. Temperatures hit the single digits in the winter, and the chilly weather is accompanied by more rain.

Lovely cottage in ideal location

5 of 5
There were just the two of us but this cottage is plenty spacious enough for four adults and a little one. Spotlessly clean with everything you need, comfy bed and a relaxing lounge. Great wifi. Photos don't do it justice. One of the sofas could also be used for sleeping and there's a downstairs shower room so guests who struggle with stairs can be accommodated. The location is ideal: just next to a spacious car park and the High Street with loads of eateries and a Co-op, but only a short drive from beautiful countryside and coastlines, and still peaceful at night. Caroline is helpful and only at the end of the phone, while never intruding, which is absolutely perfect. We loved it here and would definitely stay again. Many thanks!

A fabulous place to stay

5 of 5
This is a lovely house, which is beautifully decorated and very comfortable - and we were very lucky with the weather, so were able to make ample use of the barbecue and outside table. It is also in a very good location for sightseeing in the area, with lots to do. We particularly enjoyed our cycle ride to Lymington and back along the coastal path. Our only (very minor) comment is that it would have been good to have had a couple more serving dishes. We will definitely recommend Berry Cottage to our friends!
