Enjoy traditional seaside activities with holiday cottages in Aberaeron

Aberaeron is a small town on the West Coast of Wales. As part of the famed Cardigan Bay, it sits between Cardigan and Aberystwyth. It boasts a steep pebbled storm beach, which was awarded Blue Flag status in 2005, and a shoreline which is dominated by the famed, Cesar Award Winning Harbourmaster Hotel. The area has a rich history and heritage which still accounts for much of the local economy and is one of the only coastal towns in Wales to have been man-made.

HomeAway has a wide selection of holiday cottages in Aberaeron available for groups of all sizes. Guests can expect home comforts including large, well-equipped kitchens, spacious conservatories and private gardens. Many of the holiday barns in Aberaeron also enjoy traditional finishes such as wooden rafters, luxurious fabrics and exposed stone. Those visiting for a relaxing or luxury break may also want to consider a cottage with a hot tub.

With its rich history and delightful coastline, it’s not difficult to see why Aberaeron delights so many returning guests. Those visitors seeking out a country location with acres of hills and valleys for climbing and hiking may also enjoy a visit to Snowdonia where there is a wide selection of holiday cottages or alternatively, an apartment in the thriving town of Wrexham.

Things to do

Wildlife: Cardigan Bay is one of the finest locations in the United Kingdom for dolphin watching. The bay is home to a large pod of Bottlenose Dolphins who have become a tourist attraction in their own right. The area is home to approximately 300 dolphins, as well as a group of harbour porpoises. During calmer periods, the groups are visible from the shore and many locals will be able to advise on the best viewing points, and in addition there are also a number of chartered boat trips which take guests right to the centre of the wildlife action.

Food and drink: Every week the town plays host to a farmers’ market where the finest examples of local produce can be purchased directly from the artisans who create them. Local honey from the New Quay Honey Farm is widely known and acknowledged to be among the best in the country, whilst beers, mustards and, of course, seafood, are among the delights on offer. Visitors can stock up on the local produce to enjoy in their Aberaeron holiday cottage.

History: Aberaeron was formed in 1907 by then Mayor Reverend Alban Thomas Jones Gwynne, who applied for an Act of Parliament to transform the small fishing village into a major harbour and port. Although much of the harbour activity has now ceased, the heritage of the area is still very much celebrated. Many monuments exist to celebrate the achievements, local buildings are still open to the public, and guided tours around the area are widely available.

Fishing: Although anglers generally tend to have their own preferences as to sea, river or lake fishing, there is something for everyone in Aberaeron. As well as the several coastal points and chartered boats for sea fishing, there is a variety of well-stocked pools in the local area, including Llanarth Coarse Fishery, Fron Farm and Llanerchaeron. Locally there are a number of tackle and bait shops and many of these can offer advice on favoured spots.

Weather

A low sea level and shallow waters combine to give Aberaeron a mild climate which is the envy of its’ neighbouring towns. Average high temperatures during the main summer months of June, July and August tend to peak at 19°C, dropping down to 10°C on cooler days, whilst the winter months rarely see temperatures below 3°C. That being said, Aberaeron has suffered from excessive frosts in the past as the result of a cold front pushing in from the mountains.

Travel

From the Midlands and the North, holiday barns in Aberaeron are easily accessed by way of Aberystwyth whilst the easiest access for those travelling from the South is through Swansea and Camarthan following the A487. The town is also served by a small railway station with trains arriving and departing to Aberystwyth on a regular basis. Cardiff Airport (CWL) is the nearest airport, and offers both international and domestic flights.

Excellent position, fantastic views.

A lovely cottage forming part of a larger property, nice outside decking area with good views down to the bay and the town. Steep driveway and access lane. Property was nice and clean, with good sized bedrooms and a large living area. Steep narrow staircase and unfathomable heating controls. It was very cold when we arrived, we suspect we may have been the first to rent the property since winter. Warmed up over about a day though and stayed warm for the rest of our stay. A nice break in a pleasant location.
