Holidaymakers looking for a quiet location with pleasant beaches and plenty of activities may like to travel the Kerkennah Islands off the east coast of Tunisia. There are many fun things for tourists to do and see here. Here visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, villas and apartments.
The Kerkennah Islands have some delightful stretches of beach, which are ideal places to relax and sunbathe. Various watersports can be tried here during most of the year such as swimming, fishing, wind surfing and sailing. Hiking, cycling and horse riding will enable visitors to explore scenic places and it is also a good area for bird watching. Holidaymakers may like to take a sea picnic in a traditional dhow for the day with the chance of spotting some dolphins. Golf fans will need to cross back to the mainland on the ferry, where there are numerous 18-hole courses. The biggest islands of Chergui and Gharbi have a selection of restaurants, shops and markets. There are some very pleasant seafood restaurants to be found for example. Self catering holidaymakers will be able to purchase food and drink from stores and market stalls as well as various gifts and souvenirs. However, for a bigger selection of shops visitors can take a ferry trip back to Sfax on the mainland.
The islands are very quiet and can be visited via boat trips with Chergui and Gharbi the main attractions. Chergui is the largest of the islands and visitors can see the main village here called Ramla or the pleasant fishing port of El Attaia. One of the sites worth seeing is Borj El Hissar, which are ruins dating back almost 1,000 years situated by the sea. The Kerkennah Museum has some quirky exhibits such as a huge whale skeleton in the museum garden. The ferry trip back to the Tunisian mainland will enable holidaymakers to visit Sfax, where there are points of interest such as the Musee Dar Jallouli and the Grande Mosquee. Sousse is an interesting place to visit about two hours from Sfax and has the best souks in the country, an 8th-century fortress as well as an archaeological museum and the Museum Dar es-Sid.
The hottest time of the year on the Kerkennah Islands is July and August when the average temperature is 31 degrees centigrade. The rainfall between June and August is minimal with the wettest months being October and November at an average of 25mm per month. January and December are the coolest months with the average temperature being 10 degrees centigrade.
To reach the islands there is a ferry service operating from Sfax on the Tunisian mainland. Sfax-Thyna International Airport (SFA) receives direct flights from Paris-Orly (ORY). Alternatively holidaymakers can fly to Monastir – Habib Bourguiba International Airport (MIR), which is approximately 140 kilometres from Sfax. Flights land here from Amsterdam (AMS), Berlin-Schonefeld (SXF), Brussels (BRU), London-Gatwick (LGW), Moscow-Domodedovo (DME), Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Rome-Fiumicino (FCO) and Zurich (ZRH) amongst others.
