Make a holiday rental property or chalet in Wengen, Switzerland your home away from home

Sitting in the shadow of the imposing Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau Mountain range is the popular chalet village of Wengen, Switzerland. Located directly opposite Murren, Wengen is a traffic free haven of peace set high in probably the most beautiful region in the whole of Europe. The stunning Alpine scenery will stop anyone in their tracks, no matter how long they have spent in the mountains. Many visitors will have seen Wengen on televisions during the annual World Cup Skiing events held on the Lauberhorn in Wengen, but nothing can prepare you for your first sight of the staggering views.

Things to do in Wengen, Switzerland

The name Wengen is never far from the lips of Alpine skiers. Despite its tranquil location, the Wengen ski resort is the most popular ski resort in Switzerland, and stays full with snow sports enthusiasts long into April. If you have not stayed in a Wengen chalet before, you may be surprised by the lack of gruelling black runs. Although many serious Alpine skiers return to holiday accommodation in Wengen each year, it is not the challenge of the pistes which draws them, but the charm of the village, the warm hospitality and the breathtaking scenery. Intermediate skiers will love the long, gentle runs which dominate the piste maps, and beginners will be at home with learner slopes right in the centre of village.

When the snow does finally melt, Wengen property becomes the target of many other sportsmen and holiday makers. The exceptional scenery, complete with a light dusting of snow on the highest peaks of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau, makes for ideal hiking country, and many people go walking in Wengen every year. There are many marked trails and walks of varying difficulty, from an afternoon stroll to strenuous, multi-day hikes. Information on trails and tracks are easily available from the Wengen tourist office, as are the locations of the best viewpoints throughout the mountains, although wherever you are, in the mountains or in your Wengen chalet, the views are never poor!

The après-ski is fairly low-key, but there are a handful of great restaurants and bars in which to soak up the atmosphere after a hard day on the slopes skiing or walking in Wengen, but there are regular cultural and folklore events staged throughout the village. If you find yourself in a Wengen property and do not wish to take to the slopes, there are plenty of options for entertainment. The Wengen tourist office has full listings, but you can go snow shoe trekking, ice skating, tobogganing, mountaineering, para-gliding or shopping in the village.

Places to holiday in Wengen, Switzerland

Every morning when you look out the window of your Wengen chalet you will see the resort of Murren on the far side of the valley. Murren is the slightly quieter, but no less hospitable of the two resorts. The Jungfrau ski region, which encapsulates the assets of Grindelwald, Murren and Wengen ski resorts, is a huge area of intermediate focussed skiing, with 213km of runs. Although there are many trains and lifts throughout the area, travelling from one side to the other can take a little while.

Weather in Wengen, Switzerland

During the winter months, Wengen is obviously quite cold, with temperatures plummeting to around 2?C for much of the winter period. Snow cover is usually quite good, but if you are aiming to take a Wengen chalet at either end of the season, it pays to check conditions. In summer, walking holidays thrive as temperatures reach a very pleasant average of around 22?C.

Flights to Wengen, Switzerland

However you decide to get to your Wengen chalet, you will not be able to drive. The last stretch to the village can only be made by taking the cog railway from Lauterbrunnen. In order to reach the railway, take a flight to Berne-Belp Airport (BRN), which receives direct flights form London. There are regular trains from the airport, which take around and hour.

We had a wonderful 4 night stay at Clare's flat! We are already planning our trip back, but next time for a week! We were on a 3-week trip through Switzerland and Italy and Clare's place was the most inexpensive and the best value. We loved having a separate bedroom, nice bathroom, sweet balcony, and full kitchen. We cooked many meals there and always found what we needed. The two grocery stores in Wengen had all the ingredients we needed for our stay. Don't be afraid of going in May - not all upper elevation trails are open, but we still did plenty of hikes and saw more wildflowers and waterfalls than you can imagine. We even woke up one day to an unexpected beautiful snowstorm. Our only regret was not having time to visit with Clare. We will definitely do that on our next trip! Thank you for everything, Clare - we have wonderful memories of Wengen.

Cosy retreat in a traditional styled chalet

                                      5 of 5
Julie was very efficient & helpful when booking the apartment. It was an easy walk down from the station, with clear instructions given by Julie. On first impression the apartment looks small, but it seemed to expand with us! It's carpeted throughout and of traditional style decor. It is in a very quiet location and we never heard a sound from the train station. There are two decent sized double bedrooms with large built-in cupboards. The second bedroom has a built in bed above the double bed. My daughter (aged 20) slept there and had no complaints! A lovely, light and sunny apartment, with breathtaking views. We sat out on the balcony most afternoons (the sheepskins we found in the drawers under the sofa to put on the chairs). The gallery kitchen ( decor is dated) was surprisingly well equipped with mixers, blenders, microwave, fridge, oven and all important dishwasher. (NB The oven dishes are in a drawer under the oven, which took me two days to locate!) The shower room is unique with twin showers, which actually came in extremely useful one day when we had a quick turnaround (!) and there is a decent sized separate toilet. Plenty of hot water was available for us all at all times of the day/evening. We didn't use the fire, but I noticed you can buy logs in the co-op. There were plenty of games underneath the seats of the dining area to occupy us, as well as two cable TV's (with English channels) and a decent Wi-Fi connection, so everybody was happy ! There Is a separate washing & boot room downstairs, which also housed the boiler, so things dried very quickly and it was very good to be able to leave your outdoor kit down there. We ate out at the hotel Alpenrose and hotel Bärron - Both of which were excellent and within easy walking distance. We kept our skis in a locker opposite the station (Central sports) as the 7-10 minute uphill walk up to the station needed concentration! (easy coming home in the evenings !) We had an excellent 10 day family holiday (with plenty of snow!) and we will definitely recommend this apartment to others. I would like to come back and visit next time in the summer.....

                                      Summer 2014 in Wengen

                                      5 of 5
What a great place, well situated, modern, clean and all the conveniences one could want. There is more than enough space to spread out as a family and enjoy the apartment to it's best. Town is a short and lovely walk away. Far enough away from the station to be quiet yet convenient enough for day to day needs. The views from the living room are fantastic and offer a sweeping panorama of the valley and facing mountains, wonderful! We are thinking of coming back again next year, which would be our seventh visit to Wengen. I think we like it ! Thank you for a great apartment.
