Make a holiday rental, home, or cottage in Neuchatel Canton, Switzerland your home away from home

Sitting amid a host of mouth-watering sights, this tourist hotspot goes to show that there is more to Switzerland than cheese and watch making. Having said that, the timeless art of watch making is well rooted in the Neuchatel region. But what visitors come to this canton in the French-speaking section of Switzerland to see are the breathtaking views on the shores of Lake Neuchatel and other such attractions. The magnificent cool climate of the region also makes a host of activities possible. Villas with private pools and spectacular views are what most visitors to Neuchatel opt to spend their nights in.

With the wealth of museums available in Neuchatel, visitors have no excuse for not leaving knowledgeable on Swiss history. The Musee d?Art et d?Histoire is of particular interest due to the works on display there. Among them are three mechanical figurines called Automates Jaquet-Droz which were crafted in the 18th century and are still in perfect working order today. They were made by a watchmaker, confirming the finesse of the Swiss at their craft. Apart from this museum visitors can also head to the MEN ethnography museum or Latenium, an archaeology museum. But the evidence of past civilizations is not confined to the museums, Neuchatel City is dotted with buildings showcasing the marvels of ancient architecture. Among them are the Maison des Halles which dates back to the 16th century and the Collegiale church which was constructed in 1185 and put into use almost a century later. The early gothic facade of the latter is truly something to behold. From the Prison Tower, visitors will be treated to splendid views over the town. A stroll down to the Old Town gives an even closer look at medieval architecture with over 140 centuries-old fountains.

To top up on the cultural experience, visitors should plan to attend the Fete des Vendages which is held every year as autumn begins. It commemorates the wine harvest. And while still on gastronomic matters, mention must be given to the excellent eateries in this part of the world. Unsurprisingly one of their most famous delicacies, the Fondue Meuchateloise, is heavily dependent on cheese. There are also a number of bars where excellent wine can be sampled.

Stunning house in stunning location

5 of 5
You aren't renting a house you are borrowing a home! We were amazed how lovely this house really is. It is exactly like it's description (plenty aren't!!) on the website. Beautifully styled and renovated house in a tiny hamlet on the edge of the river. Nathalie, the owner, is delightful and welcomed us with a tour of the house, explanation about how everything works and offered us drinks and snacks. You definitely need a car to stay here as it is in a remote area but a large town is only 15 minutes drive away. Our three children (14,11 and 9) loved the holiday too. Lots of canoeing/kayaking in the river along with swimming. Wonderful experience at the little restaurant next door having fondue- not to be missed! I can't recommend this place highly enough.

Comfortable chalet in a beautiful Swiss valley.

We were warmly welcomed by the owners - who spoke excellent English. The accommodation was set up thoughtfully to cater for our group (2 families plus other relatives, 9 people in total). Everything was clean and well-maintained. The region is beautiful and various sights were in easy reach by car: Lake Neuchatel and its surroundings, La Neueville, Berne - with its bears, (we took the train here), mountains etc. The sound of cowbells is sometimes the only thing to disturb the peace! Our hosts were helpful and even gave members of our group without transport a lift to catch their bus into town. We would recommend this chalet to anyone wishing to discover this tranquil area of Switzerland. Many thanks to the Chollet family.
