Holiday rentals in Grindelwald

Situated high up in the Bernese Alps, Grindelwald is home to some of Switzerland’s best skiing and hiking.

Set beneath the Eiger’s north face, amid the soaring cinematic majesty of the Bernese Highlands, Grindelwald’s standing as one of Switzerland’s best located and most popular and Alpine resorts is well established. Indeed, Grindelwald has been welcoming guests since the 18th century and became a key destination in the early days of winter tourism.

Grindelwald’s awesome setting, well-developed but attractive resort facilities and, most importantly, the exceptional access it offers to the spectacular mountains that surround it, ensure it remains one of the region’s most appealing resorts.

Holiday rentals in Grindelwald

Self-catering is a great way to experience this scenic alpine region. You’ll find a wealth of cosy, picturesque chalets, many of which are big enough to accommodate large groups of up to 20 people – perfect if you’re travelling with friends on a group skiing or hiking holiday. Typically, chalets look pleasingly authentic but boast spacious, well-equipped and – most importantly – well-heated interiors that will be a pleasure to return to after a long day on the slopes.

Smaller apartment accommodation tends to be clustered around the Grindelwald’s centre, granting easy access to town centre facilities including bars, restaurants and shops.

In this part of the world it almost goes without saying, but most Grindelwald holiday rentals boast breathtaking mountain views.

15 things to see and do in Grindelwal

1. Skiing. Grindelwald offers a diverse array of skiing slopes, ranging from slow, beginner-friendly pistes to some truly intimidating ‘black runs’, including the world famous Lauberhorn, which hosts the world’s fastest and longest downhill race every January.

2. The Jungfrau Railway. Operational for more than 100 years, the Jungfraujoch remains Europe’s highest altitude railway and offers a breathtaking passage through the mountains.

3. The Eiger. One of the most foreboding and, for some climbers, irresistible wonders of the Alps, the Eiger’s spectacular 1800-meter north face towers over Grindelwald like a vast wall.

4. The Mönch. Positioned between the Eiger and the Jungfrau, the Mönch is the most climbed of the Berner Trilogy peaks, a feat that’s made considerably more realistic thanks to the welcoming Mönchsjochhütte mountain hut at 3,600 metres.

5. The Jungfrau. Completing the triumvirate of world famous peaks surrounding Grindelwald, the Jungfrau is the tallest and most westerly of the trio. The highest stop on the Jungfrau Railway, where you’ll find an observatory and hotel, grants a relatively quick ascent to the summit.

6. The Lauberhorn. Despite its relatively modest elevation, the Lauberhorn hosts the world’s longest and fasted downhill race, held at Wengen every January.

7. The Faulhornweg. Among most picturesque mountain trails in the region and, according to Backpacking Magazine one of the best hikes in the world. The Faulhornweg runs along the Schynige Platte, passing beautiful rolling pastures and offering 360 degree panoramic views across the Mönch-Eiger-Jungfrau triumvirate.

8. The Grosse Scheidegg. A popular mountain hiking pass that connects Grindelwald and Meringen, the Grosse Scheidegg is accessible by bus, although the road up isn’t otherwise open to traffic.

9. The Kleine Scheidegg. Despite its name (‘minor watershed’) the Kleine Scheidegg is actually higher than the Grosse Scheidegg. Typically very busy but hard to beat for breathtaking mountain views. The Kleine Scheidegg railway station is sited at the summit of the pass.

10. Visit Interlaken. The biggest resort town in the Bernese Oberland and a popular hub from which to explore the region, Interlaken is a stylish, buzzy town set between two glittering lakes, Lake Thune and Lake Brienz.

11. Après ski at Gepsi Bar. One of Grindelwld’s best loved nightspots, Gepsi is a cosy, welcoming bar with a good selection of beers and hearty grub to warm you up after a day on the slopes.

12. Dine at Onkel Tom’s Hütte. Tasty handmade pizzas served in a tiny alpine hut. It’s easy to see why this warm, cosy pizza parlour is a firm Grindelwald favourite. Space is at a premium however, so best to book ahead.

13. And don’t miss Restaurant Belvedere. Hotel Belvedere’s restaurant offers a more upscale fine dining experience, complete with glorious views of the Eiger’s north face.

14. Take the cable car to Pfingstegg. A great day out from Grindelwald, Pfingstegg is an excellent departure point for some spectacular hiking and, between May and October, the site of thrilling toboggan run. The cable car to Pfingstegg is a swift 15-minute walk beyond Grindelwald Station

15. And Grindelwald First. Set above Grindelwald on the slopes of the Schwarzhorn, Grindewald First is reached via a 5km cable car ride to an elevation of 2168m and offers access to a wealth of hiking routes and, in the winter, plenty of great ski trails.

Spacious, Modern Comfort in a Great Location

5 of 5
We spent a week in Monte Rosa Attic as a family of 5, and were completely at home. The apartment is very well equipped (good Wifi, great TV and satellite/DVD, very modern cooker, fridge, etc.), spacious and light, and exceptionally well located (a 5 minute walk to the station, although it is a steep climb which may cause some people problems). Views towards the Eiger from the balcony and living space are superb. The beds were comfortable, although the pillows were too thin. The property was clean and well presented. The property manager, Diarmuid, was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Overall, I would certainly recommend this place to friends and family - we have visited Switzerland on several occasions and this is the best apartment we have stayed in.
