Diarmuid, the rental agent, was great! He was very helpful and answered questions immediately by text. The apartment was clean and modern (but no fireplace), well appointed, quiet, and in a great location (7-10 min. moderate uphill walk to the train station, grocery store, restaurants, and retail shopping). The kitchen was fairly well outfitted, not gourmet but contained most anything you would need to prepare a meal. Having 2 bathrooms was very nice. There were 2 negatives in my opinion: 1st, the master bedroom bed made loud noises with any movement whatsoever and getting a good night's sleep was very difficult. The thin mattress sits directly on wooded slats and is about as thick as a futon cushion (IKEA special). 2nd, the coin-op laundry in the building was hard to operate even with instructions written in English. We spent about $20 trying to get two loads of clothes dry and ended up hanging them overnight in the laundry room, and then air-drying them for another day in the apartment. So think twice about packing light and washing clothes as we did. Overall you can't beat the location and the personalized rental service- hopefully the owner will purchase a new master bed.
I would thoroughly recommend staying at this chalet if you would prefer to be away from the main town of Grindelwald. It is about 3km uphill from the centre of Grindelwald and is situated in the most beautiful valley surrounded by amazing scenery. To wake up every morning with views of the Eiger is just incredible. Any neighbours are quite a distance away and the whole area is very peaceful day and night, the only noise is from a nearby river. There are great walks/hikes right from the chalet and although we did hire a car we didn't use it every day. We walked several times to Grindelwald which is mostly downhill and caught the local bus back. Parking is quite difficult in the town and quite expensive if you do find a space. We used the car to travel to the beautiful alpine lake at Kandersteg and neighbouring valleys but we could have used the trains to do this. We drove from Zurich Airport in under 3 hours but again we could have taken the train. We met Silvia and Christian (the owner of the house) in town and followed them to the chalet which I think would have been quite difficult to find in the dark. They took the time to show us around the chalet and how everything worked. I would recommend going to a grocery shop before you arrive at the chalet for basic provisions such as bread and milk etc although the owners provided sufficient toilet roll, soap, dishwasher tablets etc. We thoroughly enjoyed our week in the area, helped by absolutely beautiful weather, and would thoroughly recommend this chalet to anyone visting the area.
