For a wonderful vacation any time of the year then Fribourg country is an excellent region to visit. This mountainous area in the west of Switzerland provides great winter and summer activities for holidaymakers. Here visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, chalets, apartments, B&Bs and campsites.

Things to do on holiday to Fribourg Country, Switzerland

This part of Switzerland offers year round activities including plenty of winter ski resorts. The area offers skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, winter hiking and ice skating. This is an idyllic area for hiking and cycling with beautiful mountains, pine forests and lakes amongst the scenic highlights. Switzerland isn’t often associated with beaches but there are some lakeside sandy areas including at Chevroux. Various watersports can be tried here too such as sailing, swimming, canoeing, windsurfing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, diving and fishing. The area boasts a number of 18-hole golf courses and tennis, squash and badminton courts open to the public. Numerous restaurants, bars and cafes are located in the region offering local fare as well as international dishes. Self catering holidaymakers can purchase food and drinks from the supermarkets and local grocery stores. Souvenirs such as hand-made crafts can be purchased from one of the many boutiques located in the area.

Places to visit on holiday to Fribourg Country, Switzerland

There are a number of interesting places to visit in this region with historic buildings and churches. The Gothic Cathedral of Saint Nicholas in Fribourg is noted for its fantastic stained glass windows. Visitors will find a number of museums in Fribourg as well including The Natural History Museum and the Swiss Museum of Marionettes. The city of Bern is just 30 minutes drive away from Fribourg and has many fantastic buildings including the Federal Palace, which houses the national parliament.

Weather in Fribourg Country, Switzerland

The warmest months in Fribourg Country are July and August with an average maximum high temperature of 23 degrees centigrade. Between December and February the average temperatures are around zero degrees centigrade. August is also the wettest month with an average of 129mm rainfall. The area receives plenty of snow throughout the skiing season.

Travel to Fribourg Country, Switzerland

Bern Regional Airport (BRN) is approximately 40 minutes drive away from Fribourg and has flights to and from Barcelona, Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Paris, Rotterdam and Vienna all year round, whilst there are also seasonal flights from London-Gatwick and Southampton. Alternatively Geneva International Airport (GVA) is approximately one hour and 30 minutes away in Geneva via the A1 road. A large number of airlines have flights to Geneva International Airport from various destinations across the world. easyJet covers the most cities including Amsterdam, Brussels, London, Madrid, Paris, Rome and Stockholm as well as many others. Car hire firms such as Alamo, Avis, Budget Europcar, Hertz, National and Sixt are all represented at the airport, with desks in the Arrivals level.

                                                                                                      I already knew the area but from another valley .However, this apartment was beautifully appointed amongst glorious scenery and contained every home comfort one could need. We visited a selection of scenic and interesting places - Gruyere, Thun, Lake Geneva and Chateau de Chillon, Bern, Gstaad and Les Diablerets, Our entire trip was enhanced by glorious weather and meals both at the apartment and on our visits were eaten outside. The enormous terrace was a great bonus. A dip in the pool during such hot weather was very therapeutic. The tranquil surroundings did not put us in an isolated position as food supplies and fuel for the car were within easy reach.

                                                                                                      The apartment was lovely, and very well equipped with everything you could think of. Very happy with the location, a short walk to the lakeside and shops. Good transport links near too. The view of the water was a little limited, with some large trees in the way, still good views of the mountains though. Could have done with some detailed instructions for finding the apartment (struggled a little in the dark). Would be happy to stay there again if visiting the region, as very comfortable and a good base for exploring the area. Chateau Chillon a highlight, easily reachable by road or boat. The lakeside is beautiful, whichever direction you travel in. Easy to walk into Vevey or even along to Montreux. The mountains are impressive too of course, access by bus, train and furnicular are easy options if you don't have a car.
