Make a holiday rental house, villa or chalet in Bernese Oberland, Switzerland your home away from home

Bernese Oberland is an unbelievably beautiful region of Switzerland, where snow capped peaks, lush green valleys and the crisp, clear air will make you fall in love with the region before you even reach the front door of your Bernese Oberland chalet. It is impossible to describe the staggering beauty of Bernese Oberland in words, but the reaction of holiday makers when they first arrive says it all!

Things to do on holiday in Bernese Oberland, Switzerland

Bernese Oberland, Switzerland is a walking paradise. The pure natural beauty of the area and the limitless trails through deep forests, stunning glaciers and along the beautiful shores of Lake Thun mean walking holidays to Bernese Oberland are never forgotten.

Aside from offering the finest walking to be found probably anywhere in Europe, Bernese Oberland offers windsurfing, sailing and scuba diving in the crystal clear, crisp waters of Lake Thun. Of course, there is no shortage of challenging terrain for mountain climbers, rock climbers, mountaineers, horse riding and golfers. Taking a Bernese Oberland chalet is also a great idea for those looking to get their adrenaline flowing. Zorbing, wake boarding, bungee jumping and ice climbing are prevalent in the area too. As I am sure I have already mentioned, Bernese Oberland is a beautifully natural region, and it has been protected with the creation of many national parks and botanical gardens.

Places to holiday in Bernese Oberland, Switzerland

Ideally situated in the centre of the region, Interlaken sits between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, which makes it a perfect place to explore the region on foot. The triple peaks of Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau are no distance from Interlaken, and can be explored by walking, hiking or for the extremely fit, mountain biking. The unrivalled views from the numerous viewpoints on Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau are not only accessible to those who love to walk, as there is a cable car which climbs into the mountains, although a head for heights is essential!

There are a great number of beautiful, traditional Swiss villages in the region, which all act as magnificent centres for hiking and walking in the summer and skiing in the winter. The network of cable cars originating from Grindelwald leads to a range of short, long and multi-day walks throughout Switzerland, many of which are still suitable to enjoy during the winter.

Brienzersee is a great base for walking in Bernese Oberland. Holiday accommodation by the lake side in Brienzersee is nothing less than idyllic, and a great option when you first arrive at your Bernese Oberland chalet here is to take a trip on the paddle streamer which majestically crosses the Lake.

Weather in Bernese Oberland, Switzerland

Switzerland’s long, warm summers are ideal for walking in Bernese Oberland, soaking in the atmosphere and scenery, as average temperatures reach 25˚C, cool enough to leave the highest peaks with a dusting of snow, but warm enough to make the turquoise waters of Lake Thun pleasantly refreshing. Winters are of course cold, as the skiing, especially off-piste comes the main attraction drawing visitors to the self catering chalets of Bernese Oberland.

Travel to Bernese Oberland, Switzerland

The highest train station in Europe, Jungfraujoch, connects the Bernese Oberland to both Zurich (ZRH) and Geneva Airports (GVA). Cheap flights are available on a regular basis to both of these airports. Berne Belp (BRN) is the closest airport to the self catering accommodation in Bernese Oberland, but cheap flights direct from the UK to Berne are slightly harder to find.

Perfect for our stay

5 of 5
We stayed a week in this very spacious clean apartment chalet. The buses were available and train station only a 10 min walk through an easy track. Rooms very spacious lovely sunny outside deck. We would return again and recommend. Gorgeous mountain views from deck. Loved our stay and Lauterbrunnen Bruce & Pam Wanaka NZ

Excellant Apartment, beautiful village, very good public transport.

5 of 5
The apartment was as described, clean and functional. As I was only staying a week I did not use the dish-washer, washer machine or dryer. Just as well as I could not find the instructions for either appliance left in apartment. The guest instructions left in the apartment were slightly different to those supplied before arrival. One aspect in them I found strange was a comment that calls to the local manager out of hours 9pm-9am may incur a call out charge. This is not the right attitude if you are encouraging tourism. Such call outs may be frivolous or even vexatious but as a business you have to take the rough with the smooth. A minor point for future editions of guest information to be issued for arrival is that Switzerland does not use the standard European mains socket (Schuko) and although one adapter to UK or Schuko was supplied in the apartment, guests may prefer to bring their own what with cameras, phones, electric toothbrushes, shavers etc etc needing to be charged. Another matter I found irksome was to do with rubbish disposal. Only one 35L tax paid rubbish sack was supplied and as it was obvious that even just for me for one week this was not going to be anywhere near enough. I have better things to do on holiday than having to seek out the special taxed rubbish sacks or going to recycling facilities in Laterbrunnen. In the end I filled up one of my own rubbish sacks I brought with me, taped it up and threw it in the back of the car and brought it home to deal with. As to the holiday itself, I bought a Swiss Pass --it looks expensive at 376CHF for 8 days -- but when you begin to use it you realise that trips are so expensive you are unlikely to lose money on it. Of course we all know Switzerland is an expensive country and tourism must supplement an economy known for making watches and penknives. I made the mistake of over planning my trip & bought in advance a ticket for the rail trip to the Jungfrau. On the day I and a train full of Japanese took the trip and on arrival the cloud was so thick you could hardly see your hand in front of you face. Still the sight of dippy Japanese girls wearing T-shirts and wondering why it was so cold at 12,000ft made the day thoroughly enjoyable. Moral of story- check the weather forecast and buy your ticket on the day. You will get a discount with a Swiss Pass so the cost will be 137.40CHF. The Japanese will take all the reserved seats, of course.
