Castries is the capital of St Lucia and is located on the northwest side of the island. It is a busy port of call for Caribbean cruise ships which use its deep harbour. Consequently there are plenty of duty-free shops and a bustling market. The town itself is quite newly built, having been destroyed by fire several times in its long history. A holiday villa in Castries provides the perfect base for exploring further afield by road or by boat.

Buy local crafts, fresh fruit and Indian spices from the local women in their traditional dress and cotton headdresses. Dining out in Castries is also excellent, particularly at some of the fish restaurants which overlook the busy waterfront. Views from the top of Morne Fortune make this walk well worth the effort. The area is within easy reach of your Castries holiday villa. The hill is the site of Government House and a tour of the exotic gardens is well worth doing. Visitors can also explore the military cemetery, the Old Battery and the Powder Museum, all relics of St Lucia’s colonial past. St Lucia has many fine sandy beaches which are ideal for swimming, sunbathing, snorkeling, diving, boat trips, watersports and even turtle-watching.

Castries itself has very little history although the original sea defenses are worth seeing. The central point of the town is the Derek Walcott Square with the Cathedral which is beautifully decorated with candles and flowers. It is in the shade of a huge samaan tree which is thought to be 400 years old. To the south of the square are some of the older French buildings which date back to the 19th century. Just outside Castries is the Marquis Estate, one of the largest on the island. It offers tours of the working plantation, a visit to the old sugar mill and boat rides on the river. Other places to visit include the weekend street party at Gros Inlet and the beautiful beach at Marigot Bay.

The open plan kitchen, dining area / lounge was ideal for keeping everybody in earshot whilst spreading us out. There was lots of space for us and it would suit up to 6 with 8 maybe a little tight. The decor is generally good but just becoming a little worn in places. The housekeeper was very helpful and friendly and maid did an excellent job. The back of the villa is very private with amazing views over the bay. The pool was not heated but was warm all day. One niggle was the wifi which did work fine for emails and web browsing but not so good for streaming but given the location it is pretty impressive it had any at all. There is not a whole heap to do apart from going down to the bay where there are a couple of restaurants, small supermarket, cafe and a bar. If you are looking for a quiet time with some options to eat out and easy self-catering this place is spot on. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend it.

We stayed in "Banana Cottage" which was roomy and comfortable. Loved the wide balcony, eating dinner as the sun set over the sea or the rain rattled down (the rain was very well behaved and only came when we were driving or in the cottage!). Lovely gardens (Wanda's work), brilliant views (esp from the pool). The location is ideal - easy driving down to Soufrière or up to Castries for the market, Pigeon Island and the wild NW coast with the Atlantic breakers. Best of all - the hospitality of David and Wanda. They are genuinely kind hosts, full of knowledge that they are happy to share. We took a tour with David to the south on our first day, a great way of getting bearings and getting an introduction to the history and geology of the island. Breakfasts were lovely - fresh fruit, coffee, rolls and (if you're lucky) Wanda's very good pancakes. Sorry to be leaving after such a short visit, but we feel blessed that we found this wonderful place to stay. It really is a paradise! Room Tip: We loved our cottage (Banana). Just had to tear ourselves away after 2 weeks at Blue Maho. This unique, spacious villa had begun to feel like home; it is an older property and has a few quirks but these mostly add to the charm. In general, the description of this villa was very accurate and we felt good value for money. However, some of the windows and mosquito screens could do with some attention. The through lounge is an ideal place for relaxation and the 2 main bedrooms really large and with efficient air conditioning. And the massive beds must be the most comfortable I have slept on while away on holiday. The good sized pool may be cold but is very refreshing to escape the heat. The view must be the top selling point of this villa, though. Overlooking the whole of Marigot Bay, you can spend hours watching yachts come and go, the little ferries going between the shores, the pleasure tours with their music, dancing and guides (not too many of these luckily!); plus in the evening you can see the cruise ships going back out to sea for the next leg of their journey. The manager Pauline was wonderful - she responded immediately to any problems and was full of useful information. She met us to guide us to the villa so we found it OK; however, perhaps some signs could be put up on the local roads to help people find it? There are several restaurants in Marigot Bay, most of which we tried. The Rainforest Hideaway is worth a visit if only for its position, Doolittles was rather disappointing, Mygo's OK and Juilettes at the top of the bay a good option. The drive to Soufriere, although only 20 miles, took us about an hour (we had hired our own car) but it is well worth a visit The road is in fairly good condition (compared to some of the other roads we drove on!) but winds its way up and down all the hills. We especially enjoyed the mud baths at the Sulphur Springs. And we had a couple of lovely lunches in the restaurants of 2 hotels: Hummingbird (just as you come into Soufriere) and Stonevillas Estate (on the hill going out of Soufriere). Another trip worth going on is the aerial tram ride; we managed (eventually) to find this ourselves but you might be better getting a taxi as it is really difficult finding your way around in a car once you get off the main roads; no road signs and rarely a sign to tell you which village you are in. Pigeon Island in the north is also worth a look. Altogether, a lovely holiday in the most beautiful bay on a beautiful island.
