Things to do on holiday in the South Coast of Sri Lanka

Escaping to the South Coast of Sri Lanka is an absolutely magnificent option for the perfect beach holiday in the blazing sunshine. Tourist crowds are brilliantly sparse, and not due to a lack of Sri Lanka tourist attractions either. There are more secluded little bays than you could possibly find in two weeks, but you will no problems in finding an idyllic spot to relax on the beach under the shade of a palm tree. The South Coast of Sri Lanka is a surfing, scuba diving and swimming paradise, with the warm seas providing comfortable swimming conditions, plentiful marine life and excellent surfing conditions in places. In fact, the Unawatuna Reef on the South Coast of Sri Lanka is home to more species of marine animal that the Great Barrier Reef, and visibility is second to none.

Inland, the South Coast of Sri Lanka is home to the two most important national parks on the island. The Yala West National Park is the ideal place for safaris on foot, letting you see the true nature of the island first hand. You can even stay in a tree-top house in the park for an eco-friendly stay. Situated on the edge of the park is Sri Lanka’ holiest temple, the Kataragama, a Hindu Temple, which is a fantastic place to visit in July and August during the full moon when the Perahera Festival takes place.

Places to visit on holiday in the South Coast of Sri Lanka

Galle is Sri Lanka’s most impressive town. Steeped in history and still surrounded by the 16th century defensive walls built by the Dutch, which protected the city from the worst of the tsunami, Galle offers visitors a sensational amount of entertainment and place of interest to explore. A holiday home or villa in Galle is an ideal place from which to explore the interior of the island too, with excellent access to both the Uda Walawe Game Park and the Sinharajah Rain Forest.

Unawatuna is not still the deserted beach paradise it became famous for being, yet its charm still shines through. There is plenty of beach with safe swimming and the best scuba diving on the island, and the small restaurants which surround the beach serve the finest of Sri Lankan cuisine at very low prices.

Peaceful oasis!

5 of 5
We were a little unsure when we arrived on the street and were directed down an alleyway to the villa. But it is an oasis of calm and loveliness. The villa has everything you can possibly need and the beach is secluded and mostly empty, save for the odd person and cow, leaving an uninterrupted view of the ocean. Sudath was attentive and helpful, arranged trips and gave advice. The tuk driver was on hand and we often went into Hikkaduwa to eat, especially liking Mambos, Top Secret and Moonbeam. Breakfast was catered with delicious homemade jams and any other meal we wanted could be provided as well. We loved the tranquility, which compared with the bustle of local towns and found the villa incredibly relaxing. Sudath organised trips for us to Mirissa to see the whales, to Galle and organised a car to the airport. The temple in Ambalangoda was incredible and beautiful, the lying down Buddha was amazing. The moonstone mines are to be avoided and are a con, but the surrounding area is beautiful and we could not hesitate to recommend this villa. We had a wonderful stay. Thank you!
