Make a holiday apartment in Zaragoza your home away from home

Cosy, and decorated with flair Zaragoza holiday apartments are great for a city break with culture, history and great food. The city has wonderful heritage spanning more than 2000 years and representing an interesting blend of Spanish and Moorish styles. At a holiday apartment in Zaragoza in the city centre you won't have to walk far to encounter a beautiful church or fragment of Roman history. The range of Zaragoza holiday homes is ideal for both couples and families, with interiors that are newly decorated and endowed with up-to-date amenities like air-con and dishwashers.

Things to do

-Heritage. Zaragoza has lots of Roman, Moorish and medieval Spanish history to discover. The La Seo Cathedral is from the early-14th Century and was built on a Moorish Mosque, which before that was part of Zaragoza's Roman forum. Large sections of the mosque are still visible. For more Moorish history, you can visit the fortified palace, Aljaferia, the interiors of which preserve intricate Islamic decoration.

-Attractions. Zaragoza's Roman heritage is showcased mostly by museums - the forum, baths, Ebro port and theatre can all be visited on one ticket and all date to the 1st century BC. This part of Spain is also connected to the romantic artist Francisco Goya - at the Museum of Fine Arts there's a collection of his works, as well as by other masters like Rubens, El Greco and Velazquez.

-Shopping. As a major city for this region, Zaragoza is full of great shops. The best place to go is between Sagasta and Plaza de Espana. If you'd like to indulge in some luxury shopping then the upmarket boutiques and fashion houses are clustered around the Cadiz, Isaac Peral and Francisco de Vitoria streets. For fresh produce, look no further than the Mercado Central, while the Augusta Commercial Centre is where you can find high-street shops, restaurants and entertainment all in one place.

-Cuisine. For traditional gastronomy you could sample the distinctive local dish, Bacalao Zaragozana, which is a cod stew with garlic and eggs. Lamb is the traditional meat for this region, and is prepared in a wide variety of ways, but generally fricasseed or slow-roasted with garlic and olive oil. For dessert you could try peaches poached in red wine.

-Day trips. If you've now got a taste for Francisco Goya, you could make the short drive south to Fuendetodos, where he was born. His birth house is preserved, and close by there's a museum of his graphic work. For medieval history you could visit the spectacular monasteries Cartuja Aula Dei - also displaying works by Goya - and Monasterio de Piedra, a cistercian abbey from 1194.

Weather in Zaragoza

Holiday accommodation in Zaragoza is set in Spain's inland, where there's a continental Mediterranean climate, with not much in the form of rainfall throughout the year. Spring and autumn are the wettest seasons, while winter is comparatively dry, and summers are practically drought-like. Lasting from mid-May to late- September, summers here have temperatures that climb to between 24 and 33 degrees. Winters are fresh, and usually cooler than in coastal areas. Temperatures in January get up to ten degrees by day and drop to just above zero at night.

Travel to Zaragoza

The simplest way to reach holiday homes in Zaragoza is via the city's own airport (ZAZ). It receives mostly domestic flights from the Canary and Balearic Islands, but there are a few connections with low-coast carriers from the UK throughout the year. The airport is just 15 minutes from the heart of Zaragoza by car. There's a bus every half hour from the airport to a number of locations across Zaragoza. The city is also on Spain's new AVE high-speed train line, with swift links to both Madrid and Barcelona.

Great base for a city break

4 of 5
We stayed at the flat for 5 nights, it suited all our requirements (family of 5) and the location is perfect. Spacious and comfortable, a 5 minute walk from the main tourist office, cathedral and historic centre of Zaragoza, the flat is well equipped and has everything you need. Maria José is pleasure to deal with. Would highly recommend this apartment.

Warm and comfortable, very spacious apartment. Everything was in excellent condition and much was brand new. Friendly and accommodating owners. Lift and a flight of stairs to 5th floor - views from balcony of rooftops and church towers. Walking distance to all the tourist sights. Secure, reserved parking (included in rental) in nearby underground carpark. A great place to stay.
