Make a holiday rental home or townhouse in Ugijar, Spain your home away from home

Ugijar is a small, traditional Spanish village in the province of Granada, and a great holiday rental destination for those that want to get off the beaten tourist track. As well as offering authentic attractions, cuisine and holiday accommodation in the village centre, Ugijar is on the fringes of the Sierra Nevada National Park, making it a great base for almost any type of outdoor activity holiday.

Things to do in Ugijar, Spain

The village of Ugijar has remained loyal to its Spanish roots, and as a result offers tourists traditional attractions rather than modern ones. One of the highlights are the local tapas bars, where you can enjoy a selection of sharing plates or simply opt for the ‘Menu del Dia’. Either way, the prices are more than reasonable, and even the most seasoned of travellers are likely to be able to try something they have not tasted before.

The church is the main focal point in the village centre, with a number of narrow side-streets darting off around it. This is also where you will find the local market, which is something of a local favourite and a great place to pick up food supplies, clothes, leather goods and various other souvenirs. The stalls open up early in the morning, and you should allow at least two hours to peruse.

The Sierra Nevada National Park is also literally on the doorstep of Ugijar, and offers a wealth of both summer and winter activities. Whether you are into mountain biking, hiking, bird-watching, wildlife-spotting, horse-riding, skiing, or simply walking around and taking in the scenery, you are certain to be able to find something of interest to do, and to end up with plenty of scenic photograph opportunities.

Places to visit on holiday in Ugijar, Spain

The fringes of the Sierra Nevada National Park are scattered with small, rural villages like Ugijar, and an enjoyable and fulfilling vacation can be spent alternating between them and the National park itself. Alpujarra (18km) and Valor (8km) are two of the closest, and the best places to start your ‘village-hopping’ tour. Another option is to head to the big cities, such as Granada (100km north-west) and Almeria (80km south-east).

Weather in Ugijar, Spain

The region around Ugijar is renowned for its excellent air quality, clear skies and hours of sunshine. Winters are the perfect example of this, with near-zero temperatures but still hour upon hour of sun. The snow melts as the spring arrives, and the summer months can receive excellent temperatures of up to and over 30C.

Flights to Ugijar, Spain

The best way of getting to Ugijar from the UK is to fly to Almeria Airport (LEI), which is 99km from the village – a journey which will take around an hour and a half. An overnight stop-off in Almeria is strongly recommended, allowing you to enjoy the attractions of this historical city, before heading on to your holiday rental accommodation in Ugijar.

Beautiful secluded mill in quiet small valley in Alpujarra.

5 of 5
The Mill is a beautiful place, the facilities are excellent. The views from the balconies are breath-taking over the valley, the sun beats down on the balcony from mid-morning to late evening. The waterfall and the small burn are lovely and very soothing and refreshing. The overall feel of the place is serenity and peaceful, from the Mill the walks to Juviles and Alcutar are spectacular and not too taxing on the average walker. the route around El Fuerte and the return from Timor via the ruta Medieval is worth the effort. The Mill is very easy to find from Granada, the road although winding and in the mountains is very modern and very well maintained, from Granada there is not need to rush as the vistas and photograph points are worth stopping for. The local facilities are excellent although not always amenable when required most shops are closed during the afternoon opening at 5 to 6.00pm but it is deep in Spanish countryside where the pace of life is slower but very friendly. The approach to the Mill from the road is down a steep incline which needs to be traversed after parking your car. This may be a burden to elderly or the those who struggle with fitness but again this adds to the charm, as you descend this path it follows the waterfall and you are in reality descending through history as you approach the Mill. The owner Robin is a very nice, friendly person who makes you feel very welcome and is very approachable if any issues, question, surprises arise during the stay. He has also installed a very up to date wifi system which allays a lot of the teenage angst if you're bringing said creatures with you.. My recommendation would be to come see this place for the relaxation and access to the great walks and pace of life.. Paul & Saadia and teenagers Rafi, Arif and Farah

Lovely quirky, cosy house.

5 of 5
Had a very good time in this unusual holiday home. It was very clean and well kept. The stairs are extremely steep, which was mentioned in the advert so was not a surprise. We couldn't get the television to work and without WiFi, was able to have an undisturbed restful break away from the hurly burly way of life back home. Only downside was our stay was far too short.
