Make a holiday apartment in Suances your home away from home

If you want a destination with wild coastal scenery and lots of watersports on offer then a Suances holiday apartment would suit you perfectly. It's close to some of Spain's top surf beaches, and there are schools nearby to help you get started or top up your skills. The area around Suances holiday homes is majestic, with unspoiled sandy beaches backed by green hills, and there are plenty of interesting places to see, including caves with prehistoric paintings. Apartments in Suances are cosy, intimate and decorated with flair, located not far from the beaches and rural walking trails.

Things to do

-Local sights. This region is known internationally for its caves and paleolithic cave art. Two examples are just a stone's throw away. Cudon Cave was found in the 30s and contains paintings from between 24,000 and 30,000 years ago. Even closer is Cave of the Witches, and this also contains paleolithic art, as well as impressive geological formations. If you'd like to see more, there are three other caves just five kilometres further at Orena, Sanillana del Mar and Queveda.

-Beaches. On the immediate coast there are five beaches. Especially picturesque is Los Locos, which is a horseshoe-shaped sandy bay flanked by grassy cliffs. It's easy to get to on foot and great for a walking if it's too chilly for a swim. Playa la Concha is probably the best option for swimmers because it is partially protected by offshore rocks. There are moderate swells here and the beach is urban in character, with a boardwalk and excellent services for tourists.

-Recreation. As many beaches on this section of the Cantabrian coast are exposed to the full force of the Atlantic, the conditions are perfect for surfing. There's a surf school in Suances offering daily 2.5-hour lessons and providing you with all the gear you'll need to get started. Lessons take place on La Concha and Tablia, which are rated as two of the best surf beaches in Spain.

-Santander. This is the place to go if you'd like to get the big picture on the various pieces of prehistoric art dotted around Cantabria - the Prehistoic and Archaeological Museum has a collection of more than 1,000 items dating from prehistory to the Iron Age. There's also an interesting Maritime Museum in Santander, as well as the Palacio de la Magdelena, a royal summer home in the early 20th Century.

-Gastronomy. Set on the Atlantic the fish is as fresh as you can get - the crayfish, cockles, lobster, mussels, clams and squid are absolutely delicious here. The best place to enjoy them is at restaurants on the harbour of villages or towns. Santander is especially well-known for the high quality of its waterfront eateries. If you venture south the cuisine is more rustic and hearty - Cocido Montanes (pork and white bean stew) is a characteristic dish.

Weather in Suances

Whenever you visit a Suances holiday rental the weather will most likely be mild. The climate here is oceanic, which means that summers are rarely hot and icy conditions are rare in winter. There's also quite a lot of rain throughout the year, apart from between June and September. The summer gets only seven or so days of rain a month, and temperatures in this season often hit the mid-20s. From November to April daily highs hover between 13 and 16 degrees, and there are about 12 rainy days a month.

Travel to Suances

Santander Airport (SDR) is the most convenient route for people visiting holiday homes in Suances from Britain. There are services from a couple of airports in the UK to this destination. The airport is about 30 kilometres from the town of Suances on the A-67. If you're travelling by ferry then there are regular services from Plymouth and Portsmouth to Santander. And if your'e arriving in this region by train then Santander has direct connections to Madrid, Valladolid, Albacete and Alicante.

A very comfortable holiday apartment

A spotlessly clean apartment. We were made very welcome by the host. The location and all facilities were very good. The only thing we that could improve would be a kettle. I am sure this would have been procured if we had asked! An ideal base to explore Santander and Northern Spain. Excellent safe car parking and directly on the bus route. Thank you.
