Make a Son Gual holiday villa your home away from home

Majorca is a great destination for anybody who loves active travelling. While it’s certainly relaxing to shoot the breeze on the beach or to sit on a terrace, sipping on wine while admiring the view, much of the best the island has to offer involves hiking, cycling, swimming, sailing and other sports. Son Gual is one of those destinations that make it possible for you to be active in the sun but also to simply relax in the lap of luxury. It’s a quiet residential neighbourhood close to Palma de Majorca and a Son Gual holiday villa will place you even closer to one of the island’s best golf courses. Holiday accommodation in Son Gual also includes smaller houses and apartments. Rental properties are generally quite luxurious in keeping with the upmarket scale of the neighbourhood. Most feature swimming pools and BBQ areas, perfect for entertaining.

Things to do in Son Gual

Son Gual is a relatively new village with modern houses. It’s close enough to Palma de Majorca to enjoy the hustle and bustle but also removed enough to provide a quiet, relaxing haven.

- Golf holidays are excellent on the island and a Son Gual holiday villa is one of the best places to stay if you love the game. Golf Son Gual Majorca, regarded as one of the island’s top golf clubs, is located only a couple of miles west of the San Gual village. Golf Park Puntiró is very close by too.

- Hipica Son Gual is a great way to keep the kids occupied. This equestrian centre has many different facilities, including a restaurant. There is a riding school that offers summer courses not only in riding, but also in taking care of horses. These courses are available in English too. The centre also offers special activities for birthday parties and other events.

- Exploring the countryside around Son Gual is an enticing way to spend time. Majorca has a myriad of walking and cycling paths and in this part of the island, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding whether you want ocean views or whether you want to head inland for farm and village scenery. There are several vineyards a little to the north of Son Gual if you feel like trying the locally produced wines.

-Palma de Majorca is the island’s capital. If you feel that the tranquillity of a holiday apartment in Son Gual is beginning to give you big-city withdrawal, head west to spend some time here. This is the only settlement on the island that can really be called a city and offers everything from great shopping to a thumping nightlife. The city also offers good sightseeing with attractions like the historic centre, an excellent art museum and Bellver Castle. Several festivals are held here throughout the year too.

-The beaches of Majorca are the island’s greatest attraction. You can’t visit Majorca and not hit the fabulous beaches at least a couple of times. Son Gual holiday villas are conveniently close to beaches like Platja de Palma and Cala Major.

The weather in Son Gual

Son Gual, like most destinations in Majorca, has a dry, sunny climate with some winter rainfall. Summers are hot and temperatures often reach into the lower thirties. In winter the minimum temperatures can drop to around 4 °C but day temperatures are usually in the upper teens, so that you can still spend your time on the greens. October and November receive the most rainfall but even then, there are on average only 12 or 13 rainy days.

Getting to Son Gual

Son Gual is incredibly easy to get to. First you need to travel to Palma de Majorca, which you can easily reach by ferry from Barcelona or by flying in. The airport in Palma de Majorca receives flights from airports all over Europe. From Palma, you can reach Son Gual by bus or take a taxi. However, renting a car in Palma is a great alternative since this will take you right to the doorstep of your Son Gual holiday accommodation.

My first trip to Palma and it is a beautiful city. The apartment location is brilliant in the heart of the old town and close to beaches, transport links and shopping centres, you feel the buzz of the city as soon as you walk out of the door, but once in the apartment it is quiet and peaceful. It was very tastefully decorated, clean and bright with everything you need for living for a short or longer stay. Merce and Victoria, the owners, were very friendly and helpful. Merce met me at Plaza de Cort to show me the apartment, she also pointed out necessary things on a city map like supermarkets, bus links, great beaches, tapas bars which was really helpful. Palma is a great base to see the rest of the island if you don't want to hire a car, I took the train to Soller and bus trips to Illetas beach and also to visit friends elsewhere on the island. I will definitely come back - great city.
