Make a holiday cottage in Solsones your home away from home

A wonderful choice for winter or summer, holiday cottages in Solsones are traditional dwellings, full of authentic charm and set within inspiring mountainous scenery. Summer at Solsones holiday homes means sunny days relaxing in the pool or garden, or heading out for a kayak, mountain bike or hiking adventure. Winter is all about the snow, with ski resorts and cross-country trails easily reached, and gorgeous landscapes that can be admired from the comfort of your car. At any time of the year it's worth visiting some of the picturesque villages and towns in the region, and when you return there's nothing like cooking with fresh local produce at your Solsones cottage.

Things to do

-Ski and winter sport. Sitting at a maximum elevation of 2400 metres, Port del Comte is one of Catalonia's premier ski resorts. There are 36 runs here, the majority of which are blue and red. The slopes are served by 15 lifts with a capacity of 15,000 passengers per hour. The northern portion of the Port del Comte range is reserved for cross-country skiers, with 25 kilometres of clearly marked trails available.

-Walks. With a long list of walks to choose, and huge swathes of unspoiled mountainous scenery to explore, hiking is a real joy in Solsones. Many of the routes will lead you to stunning lookouts or sites of ancient or even prehistoric historical importance. Trails are broken down between low, medium and high levels of difficulty, with most routes considered suitable for families. Serious hikers could take on one of the long-distance trails that crosses Solsones (GR-7, GR-1 and GR-3).

-Gastronomy. At the foothills of the Pyrenees the wild mushrooms are fantastic. And in Solsona there's an annual mushroom picking festival, which takes place at the end of October. There's even a competition to see who can pick the most mushrooms in a set time. Cured meats are also a famous local product, especially pork sausages like fuet.

-Summer recreation. Besides hiking, a wealth of outdoor activities are open to visitors to Solsones. You've got mountain biking, horseback riding, adventure parks, paragliding and kayaking, while it's also possible to hire a guide for a climbing or canyoning trip. If golf is your game, then there are two good choices here - Port del Comte and Club de Golf Ribera Salada.

-Interesting sights. Solsona is a charming town with an old quarter that deserves a visit. It is still enclosed by original gates and defensive walls, and boasts handsome squares like Placa de Sant Joan, which has a beautiful 18th Century fountain. In the surrounding upland region you'll also find numerous sanctuaries - chapels located in remote and often elevated settings. Lord Sanctuary, which sits atop a small plateau, is a fantastic example.

Weather in Solsones

If you're visiting a Solsones holiday rental in summer then you can be ready for warm weather. The region gets a Mediterranean climate, and from May to September temperatures are in the mid-20s or higher. On a typical day in July you can expect clear skies and a very low chance of rain. The wetter weather occurs from October to March, and on higher ground this can turn to snow. Conditions in winter also feel cooler if the wind is blowing off the Pyrenees to the north.

Travel to Solsones

To get to a holiday home in Solsones from the UK you'll have two options when it comes to airports. Barcelona El Prat (BCN) is Spain's second-largest airport, and gets a lot of traffic from Britain throughout the year, with a whole host of different carriers. It's about 90 minutes from the region, taking the C-55 up in the direction of Solsona. Lleida (ILD) is an alternative. It's marginally closer, with a few links to the UK, and is connected to Solsones via the A-2 and C-451.

Excellent property. Well equipped and clean.

A very relaxing get away from it all type of holiday. The journey from the town up to the property was far from easy but once there a beautiful part of the world with stunning views. Lots of beautiful places to visit.

Fantastic place

5 of 5
We stayed at this house for the first week of our holidays. The property is very private, with lots of space - perfect for a family with lots of large teenagers! They loved the beautiful pool, and we had lots of fun playing water polo with the football goals at either end. Great view of the mountains from the pool too. The games room with ping pong and table football was also very well used, and we also took the mountain bikes out one evening for a ride down to a nearby lake. The house was well equipped, clean - and also nice and cool. We enjoyed eating outside by the barbeque. It wasn't far to drive to Solsona - much bigger place than I'd thought from the map, with a beautiful church and lots of old streets inside the town wall, and also plenty of supermarkets. The mountains were not too far away and we did some amazing walks up on the Serres des Busa and up near the Port del Comte. All in all, a fantastic place for a holiday!
