Make a holiday villa in Sant Joan your home away from home

If you visit Majorca and only choose one or two beach resorts, you’re missing out. After all, the island has more than 1,400 mi2 of mountains, agricultural areas, centuries-old villages, beaches and caves to explore. It makes sense to base yourself in a central location and a holiday villa in Sant Joan is just the place. Rental properties in this small rural town range also include chateaux and villas to suit different budgets. Most properties feature a swimming pool and BBQ facilities as well as other amenities you’ll need to ensure a memorable stay. Sant Joan holiday villas make for a great place to retreat to after a day’s exploring.

Things to do in Sant Joan

Sant Joan is located almost in the centre of Majorca. From here you can take day trips to almost anywhere on the island. However, the area around Sant Joan itself is well worth exploring too. Settled since prehistoric times, the site where the town of today stands became the Alhamar estate during Moorish occupation of Majorca. In 1229, King Jaume I conquered Majorca and the estate changed hands several times. In 1300, King Jaume II issued a decree which meant that Sant Joan could hold a market and officially become a town. Today most tourists skip this small town and head for the larger beach resorts instead. The result is that Sant Joan still retains its rural charm.

-The Parish Church of Sant Joan Baptista has been a work in progress since the 15th century. Dedicated to St John the Baptist, the church features several architectural influences as bits and pieces were added or adapted through the centuries. The interior features several beautiful works of religious art, most notably the paintings depicting the life and martyrdom of the saint.

- Historical buildings to explore are within a short distance from Sant Joan holiday villas. One of these is the birthplace of Friar Lluís Jaume. This Franciscan priest was born in 1740 and arrived in the Americas in 1770. While stationed at the Mission San Diego de Alcalá in present-day California, he was killed by members of the local indigenous population during an uprising and became the first Catholic martyr in Upper California. The house in Sant Joan where he was born is an excellent example of the architecture of the period.

-The Santuari de la Consolación is a beautiful old monastery on a hilltop just outside of town.

-Els Calderes is a fascinating museum located between Sant Joan and Vilafranca and is the estate of Antoni Oliver. The Sant Joan area has been home to farmers for hundreds of years, but the dependence on agriculture also threatened the town’s existence several times, especially during periods of drought. Things changed in the 19th century when Oliver brought new ideas from mainland and taught the local farmers some revolutionary agricultural techniques.

-Vilafranca de Bonany lies just over 3 miles south-east of Sant Joan. Walk or cycle here from a holiday villa in Sant Joan to stock up on fresh vegetables. Tomatoes, garlic, peppers and aubergines are some of the fare you’ll see hanging from strings outside the shops, making for gorgeous photo opportunities. The town also hosts a melon festival in September.

-Lloret de Vistalegre is another town only a short walk or bicycle ride away, about 3.5 miles to the north-west. The views from here are spectacular, which explains the town’s name. The windmills are something to behold and if you like figs, be sure to visit at the beginning of August, when the town hosts a fig festival called Es Sequer.

The weather in Sant Joan

Sant Joan has dry, hot summers and cool winters with some rainy days. If you visit in July or August, be sure to opt for Sant Joan holiday accommodation with air-conditioning, since temperatures typically reach 29 °C and even the minimum temperatures are a warm 20 °C. Winter temperatures seldom fall below 6 °C.

Getting to Sant Joan

You can get to the island’s capital Palma de Majorca by flying in from most major European airports or by taking the ferry from Barcelona. Sant Joan is only about 25 miles from Palma. Nearby Vilafranca de Bonany is on a major bus route from Palma. However, if you decide to stay in a Sant Joan holiday home you’ll probably want to do some exploring further afield and renting a car will be a very good idea.

Great house . The pool was clean and warm. The pool shower room was lovely. Barbecue great.

Overall a lovely relaxing week. Only issue is the lack of Aircon in the downstairs bedroom which makes it a hot room to sleep in. The owner and his daughter were really welcoming. We loved their visits and the sausage dogs too. We will come back to Majorca again. We recommend Petra for meals out. There is a great square in the centre with lots of restaurants.

Nicely presented villa - good to get away from it all

4 of 5
We enjoyed our stay - villa was nicely presented throughout - lovely and clean. It was well stocked with both necessities such as toilet rolls etc but also a few extras like charcoal, firelighters and matches for the barbecue, tablets for the dishwasher, a bottle of beer, some wine etc ! - all made for a nice welcoming feel (and reduced hassle). We were met at the villa by the owner who was lovely and gave us a thorough tour - she didn't speak much English and I speak no Spanish, but we managed to communicate. The kids enjoyed the pool and I liked the views from the balcony! There are chickens in a compound (away from the house), so you do hear some crowing - we liked that, but I though it was worth mentioning. On the practical side: - there's a dishwasher and a washing machine - we were provided with tablets and washing liquid - the kitchen's well equipped with coffee percolator and espresso (again with some coffee / capsules provided to start you off), toaster, microwave, oven / hob, lots of pans, knives, etc The property has lots of electric fans but does not have air-conditioning. For most of our week, that was fine, but the last couple of nights were a lot warmer and we all found it a bit difficult to sleep. - we used three bedrooms - two with double beds, one with bunk beds. There is also a small room which I think had a cot - two bathrooms - both nice and clean (and stocked with soap). The bathroom for the master bedroom (upstairs) is reached via a balcony. - The location is not close to any of the main tourist sites - for us that was a positive, but you would need a car - we ended up driving a fair bit - again not a problem for us, but worth bearing in mind. We had brought a Sat-Nav with us and that helped a lot with navigation down some pretty small streets. One small point - the owners are obviously more used to German visitors than English - so the handbook etc was in German - not a major issue, but perhaps worth running a copy through Google translate or similar. All in all, we'd recommend Son Rebassa, but do make sure you've looked on a map so you know where it is. Hope that's useful
