Make a holiday apartment in Sant Elm your home away from home

Palm trees swaying in the breeze, white sands, crystal-blue water and sunshine: You don’t have to travel all the way to the Caribbean to experience the perfect beach escape. You can get all this and more in a Sant Elm holiday apartment on majorca’s west coast. Holiday accommodation in Sant Elm, or San Telmo as it’s sometimes known, can also include bigger options like houses or villas. There is a wide variety of properties for rent, whether you need something basic and economical or can splash out on luxury. Some properties have views that stretch forever and some are only a hop, skip and jump away from the beach. All properties are furnished to meet the highest standards.

Things to do in Sant Elm

Sant Elm is a former fishing village on the western-most coast of majorca. In 1229, this is where King Jaume I’s fleet dropped anchor before they conquered majorca. Quiet and laid-back, the village’s economy is now based mainly on tourism, with some excellent restaurants from where you can enjoy the beautiful sunsets in this part of the island.

-The beaches are the main attraction of Sant Elm. If you can, try to find a Sant Elm holiday villa that’s close to the beachfront so that you’ll have more time to spend with waves gently lapping at your feet. There are two main beaches: a large, sandy one and a smaller one that is more gravelly. Both beaches offer safe swimming in shallow waters, making them very child friendly.

-Water sports naturally come with beaches and Sant Elm has plenty to offer. You can hire a paddle boat and paddle to Es Pantaleu, a small island just off the coast. It’s so close that you can also swim there. Snorkelling around the island is great. If you prefer scuba diving, there is a diving outfit that will take you to dive sites in the vicinity and also offers PADI courses. With its harbour for fishing boats and yachts, there are also several options for cruises along the coast here or, if you want to work those arms, you can rent a kayak.

-Sa Dragonera is a nature park on an uninhabited island just a little further off the coast to the west. You can reach the island by ferry. Dragonera got its name from the fact that it resembles the back of a dragon rising up from the water and you may be able to spot it from your holiday home in Sant Elm. There is evidence of settlement by the Romans and legend has it that the pirate Redbeard or Barbarossa had a base here too. The island offers great opportunities for hiking, hillwalking and bird-watching.

-The historical sights of Sant Elm include the Torre de Sant Elm and the Torre de Cala en Basset. The former dates from the 13th century and features an old naval hospital and chapel. On Easter Monday, villagers lead a procession to this tower. The Torre de Cala en Basset was built in the 16th century to serve as a lookout point, protecting the town against attacks by pirates. A walk to this tower is about 1.5 miles long.

-La Trappa is an interesting excursion within easy distance of Sant Elm holiday accommodation. It’s a Trappist monastery dating from around the time of the French Revolution and abandoned in about 1820. There are different routes that you can follow. It’s not a very long walk and you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views over the town and of Sa Dragonera.

The weather in Sant Elm

Sant Elm, like the rest of majorca, has a sunny Mediterranean climate. In summer, the average temperatures reach around 30 °C and since this is the dry season too, it’s perfect beach weather without the humidity of the Caribbean. Winter temperatures drop down to about 6 °C and there may be rainy days too.

Getting to Sant Elm

The best way to reach Sant Elm is to travel via Palma de majorca. You can get to Palma by flying in from a huge variety of European airports or you can take a ferry from the Spanish mainland. Sant Elm is about 25 miles west of Palma de majorca and there is a regular bus service between the two towns. You can also hire a taxi in Palma or rent a car so that you can enjoy the scenic drive right to the door of your Sant Elm holiday home.

Excellent "get away from it all" mountain-top villa

We (two couples with three very small children between us) had a wonderfully relaxing week at the villa. We were welcomed with warm smiles and cold drinks by Hubert and Ulla, who helped us with any questions during our stay. The location at the top of the little mountain means you can eat on the terrace whilst enjoying the amazing views from the village of Galilea below and out to the sea beyond Palma. I imagine the views are just as good during the cooler months. The pool is heated (we had swims from sunrise to past sunset) and there are plenty of different places to sit and sunbathe, read, and chat around the villa and in the luxuriously furnished and cosy rooms. There is a opulent master bedroom and two smaller bedrooms, all with direct access to the terrace. Tips: Hire an automatic car to better handle the twisty Mallorcan roads. Enjoy the pizza and tapas down in Galilea! Take some time to explore the beautiful Puigpunyent with delicious food shops and bars/cafes.

Superb Villa

We spent a week at Carlos and Susanna's beautiful Villa during June. We were caught up in flight delays from Birmingham and did not arrive at the Villa until 1am in the morning 10 hours later than planned but Carlos who had kept in contact with us the whole time was at the Villa to welcome us and had organised a Chinese takeaway meal which was fantastic. The Villa is everything you could wish for situated in the relaxing town of El Toro which is between the major resorts of Magaluf and Santa Ponsa. We have visited El Toro many times and have always enjoyed the area especially the very beautiful Port Adriano which is only a 5 min walk from the Villa. The Villa itself is fully equipped with everything you need for a self catering holiday along with a wonderful swimming pool and was spotlessly clean throughout. Carlos and Susanna were really nice hosts and it was a pleasure for us to meet them both and we would not hesitate to recommend this Villa Harry & Val
