Make a holiday apartment in Ribeira your home away from home

Ribeira holiday homes are on a scenic peninsula in a region of Spain famed for its moderate climate, untouched nature and world-class seafood. There's a fine choice of beaches close to Ribeira apartments - some are sheltered bays facing the mainland, while others are spectacular Atlantic bays with huge expanses of sand and lively surf. On land you'll be able to reach rugged hills, covered with deciduous forest, dissected by fast-flowing rivers. Holiday homes in Ribeira tend to be compact, perfect for couples and families - most are within touching distance of a beach and are equipped with all the essentials.

Things to do

-Local culture. Ribeira is a place that will hold an interest for anybody who wants to see a thriving Atlantic port. Whether it's mussel-farming, shipping or fishing, the city owes its livelihood to the ocean. Needless to say, the fish market is a fantastic way to understand this community - it's one of the busiest in Spain and remains active into the afternoon. For remarkable views of Ribeira and the peninsula, it's well worth climbing Castro, a hill just outside the town.

-Beaches. One of the things that makes Galicia such an exciting destination is its coastline, which is longer, and has more beaches, than any other region in Spain. What's more, mass tourism is uncommon here, so the beaches have a wild, unspoiled character. There are 13 beaches in the Ribeira area alone. One of the best is Playa das Furnas, facing the Atlantic, just up from Corrubedo.

-Nature. On the other side of the cape from Ribeira is the Dunes of Corrubedo Natural Park. As well as boasting an impressive system of golden dunes, the park supports rich wildlife, with seven out of ten of Galicia's amphibian and reptile species found here. The rest of the Barbanza peninsula is made up of hills covered in rich, green forest, containing stone-age dolmen and natural sights like waterfalls.

-Santiago de Compostela. The capital of Galicia, the historic centre of this city is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's a magnificent and friendly university town known for many centuries as the final destination of the Europe-wide Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. Two sights that need to be seen here are the monumental Cathedral, from the 11th Century, and the collegiate church of Santa Maria de Sar.

-Food and drink. At a location that is synonymous with fishing, it makes sense that fish and seafood should be a staple. Freshness is the key, so most dishes are simple to preserve the unique flavours of the produce, be it hake, mussels, cuttlefish, clams, prawns or octopus. Grilled sardines are a speciality specific to Ribeira - it's a fragrance that you'll notice at different locations around the town.

Weather in Ribeira

Holidaying at an apartment in Ribeira you'll be in a humid-oceanic climate zone. Weather tends to be mild and damp all year round, apart from in summer, which is moderately warm and a little drier too. Here frosts and snow are very uncommon in winter, while the soaring summer highs experienced in other parts of Spain are unheard of in Galicia. On a normal day in July temperatures can reach the mid-20s, while in January daily highs are around 15 degrees. Winter is by far the wettest season, with half the annual rainfall occurring between December and March.

Travel to Ribeira

If you want to reach your self-catering holiday accommodation in Ribeira by air, you can use the airport at Santiago de Compostela (SCQ). From the UK there's a good variety of routes serving this destination, generally with budget carriers. There are also plenty of domestic flights between Santiago and Barcelona, Madrid, Palma and Bilbao. Once you arrive, you can take the AG-11 road down the Barbanza peninsula to Ribeira. If you're travelling by bus, then private companies like Arriva have a range of services across the region.

Pepa is a really lovely landlady - warm, funny and extremely helpful. Her apartment is bright, clean, comfortable, very well-equipped and there is allocated secure car parking in the building garage. Highly recommended.
