Make a holiday cottage in Rianxo your home away from home

Rianxo holiday cottages are next to an estuary in Galicia’s La Coruña Province. There’s gorgeous natural scenery here – on the coast you’ll have calm protected waters, safe for swimming and perfect for all kinds of water sports. Inland from holiday homes in Rianxo there’s an unspoiled expanse of verdant forest that covers tall hills, all waiting to be explored. Outwardly traditional, cottages in Rianxo retain all of their original character; with walls built from local stone and hand-hewn beams, but also provided are the entertainment facilities and functionality you’d expect from luxury accommodation.

Things to do

-Beaches. There’s a fine range of beaches close by, and they tend to offer calm waters, protected from the Atlantic by headlands and islands. Taragoña is a lovely local option – a small cove flanked by green hills. Playa las Conchas is another beautiful natural beach, backed by wooded hillsides, with an inviting strip of fine white sand next to calm waters.

-Heritage. There’s plenty of history around Rianxo, from prehistoric through Roman times to the medieval period. There are signs of megalithic activity across the landscape here in the form of dolmens, and even a nearby necropolis. The Roman period is represented by a headstone on display close by with reliefs representing the persecution of Christians. The local Church, Santa Columba, is also well worth a visit – it dates to the 1400s and is in the gothic style.

-Outdoor recreation. In the sparsely populated hinterland the landscape is one of green wooded hills and rivers, creating waterfalls and natural pools – so it makes sense that walking should be a popular local pastime. Rianxo also sits on an estuary protected from the ocean by islands, so a fun way to explore the local scenery is by sea kayak, and a number of local specialists will help with equipment hire and organise excursions.

-Cuisine. Fish and seafood play a major role in local gastronomy, and it makes sense that Galicia should have some of the freshest in Spain. Excellent here are crabs, prawns, octopus, sardines, hake, monkfish and turbot. Among the most popular local preparations are cuttlefish with paprika and grilled sardines with potatoes. Nearby Padron is known for its eponymous peppers, the spiciness of which varies famously from pepper to pepper.

-Santiago de Compostela. Journey’s end for the fabled Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage route that has been trodden for many centuries, the beautiful old centre of this city has UNESCO World Heritage status. Such is the importance of the Cathedral here that it has its own museum, collecting artefacts including early architectural fragments and tapestries from the middle ages.

Weather in Rianxo

The climate in this part of Spain is Oceanic, bringing mild conditions for much of the year. Sub-zero conditions are very rare here, where the Atlantic has a big influence on the weather. Arrive at a Rianxo holiday home in mid-summer and pleasantly warm conditions will await, with highs that are a little lower than in most other regions of Spain. July temperatures peak around the mid-20s. The remainder of the year is damp and temperate, the wettest months being December, January and February, which normally get highs in the low-teens.

Travel to Rianxo

If you’re travelling to a holiday rental in Rianxo from abroad then the simplest route would be to fly to Santiago de Compostela Airport (SCQ). This destination has a number of year-round connections to Britain, mostly via low-cost airlines. The airport sits around 45 minutes from Rianxo, which you can get to via the AP-9 and AG-11 roads. Use of a car in this rural location is recommended, but it is possible to catch a Noroeste bus from Santiago to Rianxo.

Lovely apartment on a beautiful Island!

5 of 5
The owner was very helpful from the initial enquiry right through until the end of the holiday, she gave us lots of helpful advice and information to help us have a fantastic holiday. The apartment is lovely and feels bigger that it looks in the pictures, it was a good size for 2 adults and 2 boys (6 and 10 years). It is a beautiful area with fantastic views, beautiful beaches and nice restaurants within easy walking distance. The agent who met us on arrival was extremely friendly and helpful throughout our stay. We often had the pool to ourselves and the families in the other apartments were friendly. Thank you for a fantastic holiday!
