Make a holiday apartment in Porto Petro your home away from home

Among the small, picturesque fishing villages that pepper the Majorcan coastline, Porto Petro is one of the best kept secrets. On the south eastern corner of the island, Porto Petro is home to only about 500 permanent residents, and the small-town atmosphere and authentic island life is still very much evident despite its proximity to the cosmopolitan and sophisticated resort of Cala D’or. During the summer, the population is swelled by visitors who take holiday apartments in Porto Petro overlooking the pretty harbour or large sprawling villas with private pools on the edge of the village with wonderful sea or rural views. Holiday homes in Porto Petro offer a wide range of accommodations for all size of travelling parties, are well maintained, well furnished and with all mod cons.

Porto Petro is peaceful and attractive and perfect for a relaxing holiday. It may have succumbed to tourism but it hasn’t allowed it to take over. The pace of life remains gentle and enjoys a lovely natural setting. The harbour and marina may now see fancy yachts and motor boats next to the fishing boats, but this all adds to the charm. Holiday apartments in Porto Petro have the advantage of the setting and the close proximity of the beach. as well as to the lovely surrounding rugged countryside.

Things to do in Porto Petro

-Days at the beach can be enjoyed at either of the two small beaches in Porto Petro. Thanks to the anonymity of the village and the existence of the large neighbouring resort, the beaches are not well known and the lovely sands are rarely crowded and the water is safe for swimming.

-Water sports are plentiful in Porto Petro with booking offices on the harbourside. The Scuba centre in the village calls divers for repeat visits to holiday villas in Porto Petro as well as newbies looking to learn to dive. Pool and open water tuition is available. For visitors who want to see marine life without getting kitted out in snorkelling or dive gear can enjoy a trip on the glass bottom boat which operates from the marina to Cala Figuera.

-Outdoor activities are also plentiful, with the surrounding countryside presenting excellent opportunities for hiking and horse riding. There is also a golf course at Vall d’Or, about a 15 minute drive from most Porto Petro holiday homes.

-Cala Mandrango Natural Park is a must visit. Situated on two large bays divided by a rocky promontory, the beaches are superb with golden sands and borders of pine trees. It is a great area for bird watching, especially for water fowl. Cala Mandrago is about a 5 minute drive from Porto Petro or a 30 minute walk. A charming alternative to driving or walking however, is the mini train that runs between Cala d’Or and Cala Mandrago.

-Eating out is a delight in Porto Petro. The harbour’s edge is lined with bars and restaurants with menus dishing up local and Mediterranean cuisine. At lunchtime or evening, enjoy an authentic Majorcan meal of freshly caught seafood while drinking in the views of the pine covered hills in the background or overlooking the harbour out to sea.

The weather in Porto Petro

Thanks to a warm Mediterranean climate, visitors can consider taking a holiday home in Porto Petro to enjoy some terrific summer sunshine or to escape the cold North European winters. With long summer days where temperatures can reach in excess of 30°C and mild winters where temperatures rarely drop below 10°C, Porto Petro is an all-year-round destination.

Getting to Porto Petro

Porto Petro is around 60 kms from Palma de Majorca, the island’s capital and location of the island’s only airport. There’s a busy flight schedule into the airport from all over Europe and also, ferries from Barcelona dock in Palma or Alcudia. Transfers are easy enough but a hire car is a good idea for maximising a stay in a lovely Porto Petro holiday home.

A lovely town house with great facilities and the bonus swimming pool

4 of 5
The house had everything required to make our stay a pleasant one, the air conditioning was a blessing due to the heat wave Majorca was experiencing at the time of our stay!!,. I particularly enjoyed the roof terrace and the lovely views of the coast. My youngest daughter thought that the pool was great, it was hard for us to get her out of it!,. The only slight negatives where none of the bedrooms had black out curtains and with a street lamp right outside the rooms were very light at night, we had to hang beach towels up at the shutters to try and make it a bit darker, also being with three daughters there was a lack of mirrors in the property.

A very charming and warm country home

5 of 5
A big thank you to Joan and his family for a stress free and relaxing stay in their home. We stayed for a week in August and found it to be a very practical home that has great character. There are lots of land and lots of room for children under 2 to run around and a very large pool for all to cool off. Only down side about the house is that the bathrooms could do with some updating but is practical and working order. The owner Joan is very helpful and always available at any time of day to help with advice or knowledge on markets, beachs and areas to visit. Manacor is 10 mins drive for shopping and Porto Cristo has a nice beach and supermarket as an alternative. Try the restaurant next to the house as it has lovely food and wine. Thanks again
