Make a Port de Sóller holiday apartment your home away from home

Nestled between the ocean and the Tramuntana Mountains, the small village of Port de Sóller offers the perfect seaside escape. While there are plenty of hotels, restaurants and other amenities for visitors, it is a quiet village away from the hustle and bustle of some of majorca’s more famous resorts. A Port de Sóller holiday apartment is the place to stay if you want a relaxing break close to the beach but with enough other things to do than laze in the sun. If you prefer a larger rental property, you’ll find that holiday accommodation in Port de Sóller also includes houses, cottages and even chateaux. With such a variety of properties available, some featuring stunning views and facilities like swimming pools, you’re sure to find one that will suit your pocket.

Things to do in Port de Sóller

Port de Sóller is a harbour town. Originally it was from here that the oranges grown in the Sóller area were shipped. Today, the harbour caters mainly for yachts.

-Port de Sóller’s two beaches are the only sandy ones on majorca’s west coast. Even though they’re not very wide, both these beaches offer safe swimming in the calm, shallow waters. A beachfront promenade is lined with shops and restaurants if you need a little respite from the midday sun and don’t want to return to your Port de Sóller holiday home just yet.

-Outdoors activities are terrific in the area around town and include hiking, cycling and mountain-biking. Port de Sollér holiday apartments are the perfect base from which to explore the many paths that lead along the bay or up into the hills and mountains overlooking the village. You can go on a walking tour or rent a bicycle if you don’t want to go it alone. If you’re feeling more adventurous, canyoning in the mountains is a relatively new but increasingly popular activity. You can also head for the water and explore the coastline by kayak or yacht.

-Port de Sóller tramway links to the larger inland town of Sóller. While this is a practical form of public transport, the tram has also become one of the area’s major tourist attractions. In operation since 1913, this was majorca’s first electrical tramway and some of the original cars are still in use. The route stretches along the bay at Port de Sóller and through gorgeous countryside all the way to Sóller, about 3 miles away. At the station building in Sóller, don’t miss the art museum with works by Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró.

-Exploring Soller is a must do when staying in holiday accommodation in Port de Sóller. This historic town nestled among the mountains has some fascinating architecture. Aside from the buildings dating from between the 16th and 18th centuries, there is the church of Sant Bartomeu, which has an original building dating from the 13th century, a baroque interior structure from the 17th century and a façade from 1904. The architect of this impressive façade was Joan Rubió i Bellver, who also designed the Banco de Sóller and was a disciple of Antoni Gaudí. Sóller also has some fascinating museums, like the Natural Science Museum and the Can Prunera, and art gallery with a permanent collection of works by not only Picasso and Miró but also by Magritte, Matisse, Basquiat and other artists. The town’s botanical gardens are renowned too.

-The Festival of Moors and Christians takes place during the second weekend of May so if you’re planning on renting a holiday apartment in Port de Sóller during this time it is best to book early. One of the biggest festivals in majorca, it commemorates a 16th-century Moorish invasion of the area and in Port de Sóller itself, the sea battle is noisily re-enacted with plenty of explosions, gunshots and a good dose of fun. The festival lasts for three days.

The weather in Port de Sóller

Like the rest of majorca, Port de Sóller has a sunny, warm and dry Mediterranean climate. In summer, temperatures reach the upper twenties to lower thirties but there is often a cooling breeze. Winter sees rain and colder weather with the mercury dropping to about 4 or 5 °C. Due to the mountainous terrain around town, you may also experience some windy days.

Getting to Port de Sóller

There are different ways of getting to Port de Sóller. One is by yacht but if, like the majority of visitors, you have to get here another way, the best is to travel in via Sóller. Palma de majorca Airport receives flights from many European cities and you can also get in by ferry from Barcelone or other destinations along the Spanish coast. From Palma, simply rent a car and drive to Sóller and Port de Sóller. Alternatively, take a bus or train to Sóller and then travel by tram or taxi to Port de Sóller.

Beautiful villa with stunning views

5 of 5
Es Tir is a well-appointed villa in a lovely location overlooking the harbour and marina in Port de Soller. The steep walk up from the waterfront is worth it for the views. The rooms are spacious and there is plenty of outside space to enjoy: pool, terraced garden, different seating areas for shade or sun, table tennis area. Port de Soller has lots of restaurants, bars and interesting shops and the town of Soller is a short distance away by tram or bus. There are several small supermarkets. The manager, Miguel, is pleasant and helpful, on hand if anything needs attention. We loved it and will be back.
