Make a holiday cottage in Pla de l’Estany your home away from home

Set mostly in low-lying countryside to the north of the city of Girona, Pla de l’Estany holiday cottages are for anyone who wants a rental with period detail, within large grounds and with great options for days out all around. For instance, the stunning city of Girona is an easy drive from holiday homes in Pla de l’Estany, as is the Mediterranean coast. Holiday cottages in Pla de l’Estany are traditional Catalan limestone buildings with fireplaces and wooden fittings. Rentals here have been tastefully restored and updated to include up-to-date appliances, as well as welcome features like private pools and patios for dining on summer evenings.

Things to do

-Local sights: The city of Banyoles has lots of interesting heritage. The old town has cobblestone streets, handsome squares, defensive walls and a historic canal system. The 14th-century church of Santa Maria Turers is a beautiful piece of Catalan gothic architecture. Another attraction well worth visiting is the archaeological museum, at which the oldest human remains to be found in Catalonia can be seen. It's thought they might be as old as 80,000 years.

-Natural scenery: Banyoles is also home to the eponymous lake, which is the largest in Catalonia and hosted the rowing events for the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. The lake is set within a natural park of hills that can be seen by bike or along hiking trails. To the south are the Rocacorba Mountains, which are steeper and contain interesting historical fragments such as hermitages and sanctuaries. A short way west meanwhile is La Garrotxa, where Iberia’s largest volcanic zone is situated.

-Girona: Regarded as one of Spain’s best preserved medieval cities, Girona has wonderful heritage. One of the most unusual buildings is the gothic Basilica of Sant Feliu, which is almost unique in Spain for its spire. The city’s ancient walls are also mostly intact—it’s even possible to walk a section of the ramparts, where there are great views to enjoy. Keep an eye out for the historic Jewish quarter, one of the last surviving in Spain.

-Cuisine: Tucked between the coast and volcanic mountains, Pla de l’Estany has an interesting and varied food culture. Among the superb local produce is honey, olive oil, garlic and numerous fresh vegetables and legumes like squash and white beans. Several artisan cheeses are made locally, while pork, lamb and beef are of the highest order. For fine dining the Girona province is home to some of the world’s most innovative chefs, like the Roca brothers and Ferran Adrià.

-Day trips: If a day at the beach is in order then the long, gentle arc of the Gulf of Roses can be reached within an hour. It’s known for its soft sands and handsome resorts like Roses and Sant Pere Pescador, where you can visit some delightful seafood restaurants. Empúries meanwhile is for history buffs, preserving fascinating ancient Greek and Roman heritage.

Weather in Pla de l’Estany

Pla de l’Estany holiday homes are in a Mediterranean climate zone, where temperatures in summer rise to 30°C or more. July and August are the hottest months, and also coincide with some of the driest weather of the year. The start and beginning of the season bring a little more dampness, but conditions are still relatively dry, especially when compared to UK averages. In winter the weather is ostensibly mild, with highs of 13°C; although a northerly wind blowing off the Pyrenees can make things feel colder.

Travel to Pla de l’Estany

Pla de l’Estany holiday rentals are set not far north of Girona Airport (GRO). This is the main international airport for northeastern Catalonia, and as such it gets lots of low-cost traffic from the UK, especially during the summer months. For visitors using public transport to get to Pla de l’Estany, it’s possible to get a bus from the airport to central Girona, changing for a connecting bus to Banyoles. By car Pla de l’Estany is just a short drive along the C-66.

Great place, great views, great pool

Seriously the sky never looked the same twice, the pool was great, the location really good for lots of places, if you aren't a beach obsessive. Lake swimming is great. Josep is a very nice chap. Sorted.

Lovely shaded spot to be yourselves and have fun

5 of 5
The cottage in the woods whilst quite remote is a lovely, cool shaded spot to relax in. Our teenage boys had a great time in the pool and the wi fi was good. The area has plenty to see if you are prepared to drive. Terry and Gloria are welcoming and informative hosts.
