Make a holiday rental villa or apartment in Penagos, Spain your home away from home

Penagos self-catering holiday accommodation is set in the region of Santander, not far from Cantabria’s coast. This is a part of the country that contrasts with many people’s notions about rural Spain. Here you’ll be in a landscape of vibrant greenery, with oak forests, grassy hills and undeveloped beaches that remain quiet even at the height of summer.

Things to do in Penagos, Spain

The main attraction at Penagos self-catering accommodation is the lovely scenery all around. You can embark on a hike or bike ride from your doorstep, finding quaint little villages, woodland and ancient monuments along the way. Less than four kilometres from Penagos self-catering apartments is the Cabarceno Nature Park, which is a zoo with a modern and sustainable twist. Species from all over the world are kept here, but have the freedom of huge enclosures that replicate their natural habitat.

Head a little further inland from holiday accommodation in Penagos, and the landscape becomes more mountainous, and within a half hour drive you’ll be able to enjoy activities like fishing, canoeing and, if you’re feeling especially intrepid, rock-climbing.

On the other hand you could go north from Penagos villas, to discover some of Spain’s most unspoiled beaches. The Cantabrian coast is home to some 70 beaches, a healthy portion of which are blue-flag rated. Santander’s beaches, including El Sardinero and Los Peligros are no more than 25 minutes by car, and offer clean sand and water despite the urban setting. The city is also home to some wonderful seafood restaurants, as well as stunning landmarks like the 12th Century cathedral and the Palacio Real de la Magdalena, a former royal residence.

Places to visit on holiday in Penagos, Spain

Towards the south of Cantabria is where you’ll encounter some of the country’s wildest landscapes. The Picos de Europa National Park comprises a mountain range that spans much of northern Spain. Meanwhile if you take the hour’s drive south from Penagos holiday accommodation you’ll come the Ebro Reservoir, which is a great water sports destination in summer, and in the winter offers skiing at the Alto Campoo resort.

What a privilege to stay in a place so situated in this stunning scenery.

4 of 5
We absolutely loved our holiday, location-wise the apartment cannot be beat - Lierganes is out of this world for families, so friendly, clean and packed with family-friendly amenities but quiet and quaint too. The apartment has a lot going for it, no less the view from the balcony and window seats in the kitchen area. Perfect size for a family of four. We had some trouble getting into the apartment when we arrived and there were some cleaning issues but we contacted the owner and housekeeper, both of which were very amenable and friendly and helped us out accordingly. We couldn't find the river for swimming, but again got prompt help and advice from the owner which resulted in my children snorkelling in the river with fish nibbling at their toes which they adored. A few finishing touches in renewing a few items and sorting out more thorough cleaning would transform what is already a wonderful place to stay. The garden looks amazing but we couldn't use it due to it being so overgrown - although the grass was cut the day we were leaving. The water is always hot and plentiful, the apartment is stunningly situated and very quiet at night. All in all we had a very special holiday and the owners are a pleasure to deal with.

Perfect family holiday home

5 of 5
Welcomed by the lovely host, José, who told us about the local area and places to visit. The home was superb. Well equipped, (although no kettle), well furnished, and very spacious - perfect for our young family of 5. The garden is ideal, with outdoor furniture and a barbecue. The local goat family are on hand for some laughs too. The apartment area is very quiet and peaceful. The secure garage is a great bonus. We had great fun in the pool, easily big enough for the family to swim, and we enjoyed the tennis court too. Only a 10 minute walk into the beach area, with 3 or 4 local beaches to suit all needs. Good supermarkets near by, many cafes and restaurants, and some lovely artisan shops. Well situated for exploring all of Cantabria's wealth of possibilities. Thank you, José, for sharing your home with us.
