Make a holiday villa in Paramos your home away from home

If you're planning to getaway from it all for a few days amid exceptional natural beauty then a holiday home in in Paramos would be a great choice. Paramos villas are warm, rustic and traditional, with original features like stone walls and wooden beams. Your accommodation here will be the perfect base for holiday full of scenic walks, visits to medieval towns and, if you're feeling intrepid, a host of adventure sports, from rafting to climbing. Paramos holiday homes are close to large natural parks, where the famous river Ebro snakes through towering canyons, dense forest and idyllic green valleys.

Things to do

-Hiking. The Ebro is one of Spain's great rivers, starting not far from Paramos and reaching the Mediterranean several hundred kilometres to the southeast in Catalonia. A walking trail, the GR-99, follows the scenic course of the river. Just to the north of Paramos is the Gorges of the High Ebro and Rudron Natural Park, which protects some fantastic rocky landscapes, including sheer cliffs and waterfalls, as well as rich fauna.

-Watersports. The local Rudron and Ebro rivers provide a fantastic setting for water-based activities like kayaking, canoeing, paddle surfing, rafting and canyoning. There are four adventure sports companies nearby offering all the equipment you need to get started, while also organising expeditions of their own. Land-based activities include mountain-biking, climbing, horseback rides, and even bungee jumping.

-Local heritage. The Sedano Valley features one of Spain's richest concentrations of Romanesque architecture. This is exemplified by the Church of San Esteban, which sits atop the mountain, El Castro. It dates to 1188 and is full of interesting and well-preserved elements, such as an extremely intricate carving in the portico. The nearby town of Orbach del Castillo is well worth seeing, for the strange karst rock formations that loom over the buildings here.

-Burgos. The standout attraction in this city is the UNESCO-listed cathedral, which alone is worth the trip. It's part of the famous Camino de Santiago and contains the tomb of the 11th Century Spanish hero El Cid. The cathedral building is from the 13th Century and is designed in the gothic style. The historic centre of Burgos is also neatly preserved and corresponds to the original walls, while just outside the city is the impressive Cistercian abbey, Las Huelgas.

-Gastronomy. The cuisine of the Burgos region is simple and hearty, founded on basics like bread, meat and local wine. If you're an oenophile then you could visit one of the wineries in the Ribero del Duero and Ribera del Arlanza regions. A popular dish in the Burgos area is leg of lamb roasted with honey, thyme and olive oil, or you could try Castilian soup, which involves bread, garlic, eggs and tomatoes.

Weather in Paramos

Paramos has a continental climate bringing fresh winters and warm summers. If you're heading to holiday accommodation in Paramos between June and September then you can be prepared for sunny conditions and temperatures in the mid-20s. There isn't much rain in summer, with around four or five wet days per month. On higher ground, snowfall can be quite frequent during the winter. The city of Burgos to the south tends to have five snowy days each December. Temperatures are generally somewhere between zero and five degrees from December and March.

Travel to Paramos

The closest airport to Paramos is Burgos (RGS), which handles only domestic flights from Barcelona and the Balearic Islands. If you're getting to a villa in Paramos from Britain then the most convenient choice is Santander (SDR), which is 130 kilometres to the north of this area. The drive down to Paramos shouldn't take much more than an hour as you can take the A-67 toll road. Burgos has rail connections with cities like Madrid, Bilbao and Valladolid, while you can also catch a ferry from Plymouth or Portsmouth to Santander.

Beautiful property in an idillic setting

5 of 5
We had the most fantastic two week holiday here during August 2017. The property has been renovated to a very high standard and is the perfect place to live for two weeks. It is extremely comfortable, tastefully decorated, has loads of room and is very well equipped. The views from the bedrooms and terrace are simply stunning. (Lots of good spots for a yoga mat too!) The outdoor space is gorgeous, tranquil, has both sunny and shady spots and is perfectly adequate with a built in BBQ too. We stayed here with our 12 year old son and thought it might be a bit too quiet and remote for him but that was not the case at all. The perfect start to the day for us was a run along the beautiful the countryside. We were particularly pleased to be able to use the family bicycles for an early evening cycle, taking in all the delights of the local farms, villages and wildlife too. The basketball hoop was put to very good use over our two week stay! The local town of Aguilar de Campoo is just a 10 min drive away and is great for food and sight seeing. The locals are really friendly and it is entirely accurate when other reviews say that people don't speak English. (Well why should they!) Our Spanish was very limited but so much better by the time we got home. People were really patient and helpful as we found our way with our phrase books. There is plenty of swimming locally too in both the reservoir, which can also take in a beautiful woodland walk or scenic drive, and an outdoor swimming pool that is great for a fun afternoon and cool down. I echo what is said in other reviews about all the great places to see within an hours drive. We did most of them. We really loved Santander, Comillas and Palencia, not to mention all the places you discover on the way. In summary this is an absolutely great place to stay with loads to do and yet the perfect place for total relaxation too. The owners were really helpful in providing all the information you could possible need.
