The historic port town of Palos de la Frontera, on the estuary of the Tinto River, dwells on its rich seafaring history. It was from here in 1492 that Christopher Columbus set sail on his voyage which resulted in the discovery of America. The 1755 Lisbon earthquake later reshaped the coastline leaving the town slightly inland.

The museum home of the Pizon brothers, who sailed with Columbus and helped build the ship, can be seen with its coat of arms in the main street. Take a stroll to the Monastery of La Rabida where Columbus stayed and admire the frescoes by Vazquez Diaz which depict the voyages of discovery. The castle ruins and the Fontanilla fountain, a national monument, are also worth a visit. The National Park Estero de Domingo Rubio is a large area of wetland nearby known for its eels, mullet and birdwatching.

Best equipped house we’ve ever stayed in!

This was one of the best equipped houses we’ve ever stayed in - lots of the little touches that just made everything that little bit easier - kitchen roll, hairdryers, beach chairs, corkscrews etc etc - all things we have had to buy at one time or another. The house is spotlessly clean, well located for the beach (10 mins walk) and there are lots of bars and restaurants nearby for tapas or bigger meals. We also enjoyed the pool and it was never too busy to have a swim. A beautiful stretch of coastline and even the option to pop over to Portugal for lunch which we did. Communication with the owners was excellent as were the driving directions - thank you. Our only downside - the mini-tren...if you have kids they’ll probably love it!!

A fabulous, spacious house in a wonderful location. It is exactly as described, if anything, the photos do not do it justice. Plenty of restaurants, cafes and shops within walking distance. Beaches are beautiful.
