Make a holiday cottage in Odèn your home away from home

If you’re searching for a peaceful mountain getaway, with the benefit of Mediterranean weather, then look through HomeAway’s choice of cottages and holiday homes in Odèn. Tucked away in the heart of Catalonia, Odèn cottages are found amongst rugged mountains, rivers and forest, great for skiing in winter and ripe for adventure in summer. At an Odèn holiday home you’ll be able to recharge you batteries, in authentic and historic stone buildings that have been lovingly modernised to bring the height of comfort and convenience – there are large gardens to relax in, and barbecues for good times with friends and family..

Things to do

-Winter sport. When it’s cold here you’ve got downhill and cross-country skiing close by. There’s the Port del Comte resort, with 42 kilometres of runs. Port del Comte has an efficient lift network, capable of serving more than 15,000 people an hour, made up of eight platter lifts, five chairlifts and two carpet lifts. A few kilometres further is the Fons ski station, which has a large system of cross-country trails.

-Hiking. One of Catalonia’s mammoth walking trails passes right through Odèn – the GR 1 connects this area with the small town of Sant Llorenç de Morunys, encompassing some very unusual rock-forms on the way. One local route that blends astounding nature with human history is the looped trail departing from the Romanesque hermitage, Sant Serni del Grau, making a round trip via the spectacularly positioned Santuari del Lord to the south.

-Adventure sport. Just to the east is the Platá del la Llosa del Cavall, a reservoir enclosed by wooded mountainsides. You could come here for a guided kayak trip, or explore the shore on horseback. There are a couple of companies based in the Lord Valley that cater to those who want real excitement, organising canyoning, water trekking, climbing, orienteering, spelunking, as well as snowshoe adventures in the winter.

-Cuisine. In this upland part of Catalonia, the cuisine is rustic and satisfying. Many local dishes involve meat and freshwater fish grilled over oak wood. If you’re visiting in between September and November then you’re in time to catch the famous wild-mushroom season – the local climate allows a large variety to flourish here. Picking expeditions are a popular family activity.

-Sights and landmarks. Sant Llorenç de Morunys merits a trip for its stunning old-town, with elements going back to the 12th and 13th Centuries. If you’d like some context or help seeing the best bits then you can book a guided tour. A charming mountain village close by is La Coma, which has an attractive ensemble of old stone buildings, as well as the ruins of a castle.

Weather in Odèn

Cottages in Odèn are in a part of Catalonia that has cool winters and warm summers. The mountain ranges nearby get plenty of snow for around three months. Lower down, temperatures are cool, without being intolerable. Daily highs get well above zero, and don’t sink too far below freezing at night. By April things are much warmer, and daytime highs are in the teens. On a typical summer’s day there are highs of about 26 degrees in the valleys, with perhaps a sprinkling of rain, especially as the summer wears on.

Travel to Odèn

Odèn is more or less the same distance from both Lleida-Alguaire (ILD) to the southwest and Barcelona-El Prat (BCN) to the southeast. You can reach Odèn within two hours from both by road – Lleida is around 130 kilometres away on the C-14, while is about 150 kilometres via the C-55 and C-16. Public transport is very limited in this rural part of Catalonia, so a car is necessary for anyone holidaying at self-catering accommodation in Odèn.

A very relaxing get away from it all type of holiday. The journey from the town up to the property was far from easy but once there a beautiful part of the world with stunning views. Lots of beautiful places to visit.

Fantastic place

We stayed at this house for the first week of our holidays. The property is very private, with lots of space - perfect for a family with lots of large teenagers! They loved the beautiful pool, and we had lots of fun playing water polo with the football goals at either end. Great view of the mountains from the pool too. The games room with ping pong and table football was also very well used, and we also took the mountain bikes out one evening for a ride down to a nearby lake. The house was well equipped, clean - and also nice and cool. We enjoyed eating outside by the barbeque. It wasn't far to drive to Solsona - much bigger place than I'd thought from the map, with a beautiful church and lots of old streets inside the town wall, and also plenty of supermarkets. The mountains were not too far away and we did some amazing walks up on the Serres des Busa and up near the Port del Comte. All in all, a fantastic place for a holiday!
