Make a holiday cottage in Monells your home away from home

Monells holiday homes are in and around a gorgeous medieval village amid idyllic countryside, so if you’re searching HomeAway for an unspoiled setting for rural tourism then this destination could be perfect for you. A short way from the Costa Brava, Monells holiday cottages are historic, built from limestone, and with lots of genuine features like towers, vaulted ceilings and wooden beams. Private pools complete the sense of luxury, making sure your downtime here will be a soothing complement to the thrilling array of activities available all around Monells holiday accommodation.

Things to do

-Local heritage. The small village of Monells merits a walking trip to see arched alleys, beautiful ensemble of old stone buildings and it’s sleepy main square. A few kilometres west of Monells is the national historic-artistic monument, Peratallada. This small town is also famed for its medieval heritage, taking the form of charming stone passageways, an 11th Century castle and original rutted streets.

-Walks. From Monells you can join the PR-C 103, a 14-kilometre circular hiking route that weaves its way into the neighbouring Gavarres mountain range, reaching the summit of Puig de’ Arques, the tallest peak in the area, with magnificent views. For more information about the many scenic local walks you could consult the tourism office in La Bisbal.

-Beaches. The part of the Costa Brava closest to Monells has some of Spain’s best beaches. See Pals, loved for its two-kilometre stretch of fine, golden sand. It’s a beach that appeals to teenage beach-bums and families with younger children in tow. You can come here for windsurfing, kitesurfing, or any number of beach sports. Just up from there is L’Escala, which also boasts a large Greco-Roman archaeological site.

-Gastronomy. Next to its countryside and beaches, the Costa Brava is a destination with a vibrant food culture, home to more than 2,500 restaurants. In Girona there’s El Celler de Can Roca, with three Michelin stars, and rated as one of the world’s top 50 restaurants. Traditional recipes include arroz negro, which is rice simmered with cuttlefish, prawns and died black with squid ink. Turnips are grown in various parts of northern Catalonia, and are combined with duck and game.

-Girona. Girona is the closest major city, and undoubtedly warrants a sight-seeing expedition. There’s a noteworthy cathedral, hundreds of metres of original fortifications and the grey-stoned 14th Century Collegiate Church of Sant Feliu, which is a staggering feat of medieval Gothic architecture. On the banks of the Onyar River is another unique feature – colourful multi-storey houses best-viewed from the city’s bridges.

Weather in Monells

There’s a warm Mediterranean climate in this area of Catalonia. If you’re at a holiday cottage in Monells in July then rainy days will be few and far between, and temperatures during the day will normally get up to 29 degrees. As the season progresses there’s a bit more rainfall, which culminates during October, the wettest month of the year. Despite the cooler temperatures in winter clear skies are a year-round feature – there are almost a thousand more hours sunshine per year than in London.

Travel to Monells

Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO) is the nearest international airport to Monells. It’s a hub for one important low-cost airline, which offers a whole host of routes from the UK. Visiting a holiday home in Monells it would be a good idea to hire a car, as the airport is about 35 kilometres from the village and public transport options are in short supply. By road you can follow the AP-7 northwards past the city of Girona, taking exit no.6 and joining c-66 and then the GIV-6701 on the way to Corça.

Highly recommended lovely villa overlooking hills and woodland with a south facing pool

5 of 5
Lovely villa set in a unique spot south facing so the garden and the pool have the sun from first thing in the morning until it sets in the evening. Well equipped kitchen with large fridge freezer and all open plan living area that is great for family and friends to socialise whilst cooking. There is also a great BBQ on an outside covered terrace with tables to dine at we use this a lot and eat outside every evening it overlooks the pool and the hills the views are great. We have stayed at this property two years running now the location is fantastic very close to beach great restaurants from fine dinning to pizzerias. The area the villa is set in is very quiet even in high season then only the odd car drives up and down the road and most of time you will be lucky to see anyone else. The villa has various different seating areas and spaces to realax which is great when you have a large family as everyone can go and find there own little bit of space. The pool area is truly amazing you can relax in peace and tranquility the pool is very modern and has an extremely efficient pump cleaning system so it's really clean and well kept. The house has all modcons large smart TV with Netflix account available to use also the internet is very good and we have never had any problems at all. We have an 18 month year old traveling with us and the property is very safe and child friendly there is a baby gate on the stairs and the swimming pool area can be completely closed off from little ones. The property is very secure and all windows and doors lock well. There is lots and lots to do in the area I would go for a run down to pals beach and back you have to go along the main road to get there but it's very safe and lots of other pedestrians and bikes. The area also has some of the best scuba diving in Europe and best beaches so it really does have it all. There are loads of other activities from walking to horse riding and go karts and pretty much any water sport you can do my sister learnt how to free dive here. The management company you takecare of you wile at the villa are very efficient they provide anything you need for us it was a high chair and cot but and problems that arrose during our stay very quickly delt with or repaired like when the light bulb went it the bathroom. All in all it's a lovely clean quiet place to stay and you won't be disappointed.

Perfect escape

5 of 5
Absolutely perfect. Everything was beautifully maintained and the pool was a welcome addition for a family with very young kids. It was big enough to swim and small enough that it felt very safe with the children. There were many thoughtful touches and the welcome pack too was very thoughtful. We will definitely be trying to return.
