Located 74km south-west of the city of Murcia, Lorca is a tranquil destination that offers good transport links to the capital of the region, and has become an important tourist centre as a result. With historical sites to be enjoyed, almond tree-dotted countryside to be explored, some high-quality apartments and villas to stay in and a good range of amenities thrown in for convenience, Lorca has everything to keep self-catering visitors happy for the duration of their stay in this often-under appreciated part of Spain.

Things to do in Lorca, Spain

The mains sites in Lorca are historical ones, with the 16th century Church of San Francisco and the 17th century Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) particular highlights. Much of the action is centred around the Plaza de Espana, which itself is slap bang in the middle of the historical centre of town. The old town consists of a number of narrowing winding streets and alleyways, which make for great exploring and sightseeing at a leisurely pace.

Lorca is also a recommended destination for those looking to enjoy the countryside of the Murcia region, with plenty of walking and hiking routes to choose from, and plenty of high-quality photographic opportunities for those attracted to roaming landscapes and unspoilt scenery.

Despite its historical heritage and laid-back feel, Lorca still has enough to keep more active visitors happy. There are good shopping and dining options within the town and a bevy of vibrant fiestas to be enjoyed at various times of the year, including the ten-day Grand Feria, which is held every September.

Though there are several bars and cafés within the town centre, those seeking a more active nightlife may be best to head to Murcia, which – thanks to the excellent transport links – can be reached in under an hour.

Places to visit on holiday in Lorca, Spain

Depending on the primary purpose of your visit, there are many other towns and cities to enjoy during your stay in Lorca. Small towns such as Huercal Overa (42km) and Puerto Lumbreras (17km) offer plenty for a relaxing day trip, whilst vibrant Murcia (74km) has all of the attractions you would expect of one of Spain's largest cities.

Weather in Lorca, Spain

Mild winters and warm summers characterise the local climate, and with over 300 days of sun to be enjoyed every year, it is likely that even those who visit in the middle of winter will catch a few rays – though make sure you pack a jacket, as evening temperatures can plummet down towards 4C.

Flights to Lorca, Spain

Visitors to Lorca are spoilt for choice when it comes to flights, with Alicante (ALC), Almeria (LEI) and Murcia – San Javier (MJV) all within close proximity. The cheapest offerings are usually to the latter of the three destinations, as Murcia Airport is served by budget airlines such as Ryanair and Jet2.

Fantastic with a capital F!

5 of 5
The villa is immaculately presented with all the necessary furnishings, white goods and kitchen essentials. The villa was spotless on arrival and Ben made sure we had everything we needed for our 2 year old. The outside area is so spacious and the pool is just amazing. The pool is cleaned once a week and your linen is also changed. We had the most amazing time! I am never doing a hotel holiday with a toddler ever again! Having our own space and pool was perfection. No rush for the sun lounger on this holiday. Thank you so much we have so many lovely memories and pictures to treasure. Emma and family.

Excellent value, great facilities, fantastic owner

5 of 5
This apartment is wonderful, with everything you could wish for provided by the owner, even down to hair dryers and straighteners for the ladies. The owner welcomed us with a lovely bottle of bubbly in the fridge on arrival. Full English TV for the evening, high speed Wi-Fi to keep connected, beautiful outdoor spaces both front and rear, the front having a much needed awning to provide shade over the generous rattan furniture, the rear having a large hot tub. The property is only meters from the pool which was perfect so the grown ups can relax whilst the younger ones play in the pool. The owner, Richard, is extremely hospitable, making sure we had everything we required and providing direct contact details should we need them. There are no negatives to this property whatsoever, for less than the price of a Premier inn per night, you can have a family of 5 stay comfortably. For those golfing, it's a short 2 minute walk to the clubhouse, for those not, a 10 minute walk to Al Kasar with the restaurants, bars and shop. We would not hesitate in renting this property again in the very near future.
