Loja lies in a narrow, barren valley in the Grenada Province of Andalucia, Spain. Loja is an ancient town, dating back as far as the Moors, and now concealing a great range of architectural treasures from throughout the ages. Loja is a wonderfully picturesque town, steeped in Andalucian charm, and filled with monuments from throughout the long history of the area. Things to do in Loja, Spain

Loja properties are located right on the edge of the Los Intiernos de Loja Natural Monument, a series of beautiful waterfalls carving their way through the limestone valley. There can be few places better than Los Intiernos de Loja for riverside picnics, and with excellent access to the barren landscapes of the Sierra de Loja Mountains, you cannot afford to miss this beautiful region from a Loja property rental. The Sierra Loja are wild and barren, with limestone geology that makes the region a veritable playground for potholers, walkers and cavers.

The surrounding countryside is a maze of contradictions. To the east, barren limestone landscapes give way to lush, undulating hills, covered in olive groves and littered with small, atmospheric farmhouses. This side of Loja is a haven for walking, mountain biking and horse riding, all of which thrive from accommodation in Loja. Further into the mountains, the bravest among you can even try paragliding.

There is a huge amount to discover within the town itself though. There is a rich Muslim heritage in Loja, having been a Muslim town until it was taken over by Christians in the 14th century. The Islamic Caseron de los Alcaides Cristianos fortress and Alcazaba district provide a wonderful comparison to the lavish temples and elegant, flamboyant palaces, gardens and public buildings which still adorn the town. The huge, 25 spout Fuente de la Mora fountain is certainly worth finding from a Loja apartment or villa too.

Places to visit on holiday to Loja, Spain

Further into the countryside of Andalucia is the small town of Illora, which lies along the foot of the Sierra Parapanda. Overlooking the town is an imposing Moorish fortress, precariously positioned at the head of a dramatic gorge. Hugely popular with walkers, Illora is the start of a huge range of walking trails, which emanate from the town, reaching far into the hidden corners of the mountains.

During the heat of the day in July and August, temperatures can reach the 40˚C mark, with the hot weather lasting long into the evening. Eating outside on a summer evening is an absolute delight from self catering Loja properties, something which is possible for a huge portion of the year.

Reaching a Loja property from the UK is remarkably easy, with Loja located just 35 minutes from both Granada (GRX) and Malaga (AGP) airports, both of which are served by regular flights from the UK. Malaga is by far the larger of the two airports, and it is likely that you will find cheaper flights to Malaga, as well as more options on hire car facilities. Taking a hire car to visit a Loja property is advised, only because of the huge amount to see in the surrounding areas. Public transport to Loja can be arranged from either airport.

Fab villa with wonderful views Total relaxation.

The villa is a great layout for traveling with a teenager who likes her privacy. Both bedrooms have their own terrace with table and chairs and a little seating area with sofa and table to relax in your own space. Each bedroom has an en-suite with a big walk in shower. Nothing is cramped and ample storage space for clothes etc. The kitchen dining/living area in the middle divide the two bedrooms. The front of the villa had dining table wonderful to sit and watch the sunset. The rooms look even better than the pictures. The villa was clean and a lovely welcome pack, the best we have ever had to set you up for lunch/snack and a drink on arrival .The private pool is a lovely for a dip in the afternoon as it gets very hot up in the hills, more so than on the coast. We had sole use of the pool whilst we were there with choice of chairs and sunbeds and some shade if needed. All a few steps from the villa entrance.The owners are on hand for any advice or answer an questions but give you all the privacy you require. They could not have been better, we had a Tapas evening which was lovely Anna even managed to cater for my simple tastes and same again when we had the Pizza evening. So nice to have your meal delivered to your terrace without even needing to go out, Bliss. We ate out twice in Alhama de Granda and the food was very good good quality and great value. We shopped both in the village which has all the basics and in the town with 2 bigger supermarkets and had 2 BBQ's They also organised a mountain bike for my husband for some early morning bike rides on the lovely quiet road, might be a bit hilly for some but he thoroughly enjoyed it. We visited the lake, very pretty, did not swim as it was mid afternoon too hot and no shade at the water edge so had a cool drink at the camp site kiosk. Visited the Alhambra in Granada which we had pre-booked 2 months before travel. Very hot again but worth it. Friday morning market in Alhama de Granada worth a visit do a lovely spit roast cooked chicken for lunch. Thermal spa waters just outside Alhama de Granada in you fancy a dip at the side of the river. Drive to the coast about an hour but why bother stay at the villa with your own pool much nicer than the beaches and sea. The dogs Ruby, Poppy and Leon are so friendly and welcome you every time you come back and loved having them around. Pure relaxation, peace and quite and away from it all with fab hosts I would not hesitate to highly recommend.
