Make a holiday apartment in La Garrocha your home away from home

Holiday homes in La Garrocha are set in an unusual natural enclave in northern Catalonia. Millennia ago, this was a site of formidable volcanic activity, which has endowed the landscape around apartments in La Garrocha with a climate, terrain and plant life quite unlike anything else to be found in Spain. If you’re an outward-bound type or simply want to take pleasure in verdant natural scenery then a La Garrocha holiday home might suit you perfectly. Most rentals here are sizeable, ideal for larger families and groups of friends. Accommodation is rural in character, with stone walls and wooden beams.

Things to do

-Natural landscapes. La Garrocha is a volcanic zone – in fact it comprises the largest expanse of volcanic scenery in both Spain and Portugal. There hasn’t been an eruption here for more than ten thousand years, but spectacular reminders of the geology are evident all around. You can scale many of the volcanoes here, which often boast historic chapels and sanctuaries. Montsacopa and Santa Margarida are two of the most impressive.

-Outdoor activities. The terrain, with its moderate slopes, greenery and lovely views, lends itself to activities like hiking, mountain biking and horseback rides. A fabulous route is the Via Verde, which runs through La Garrocha, linking the city of Girona with Olot. The scenery is gorgeous, but what makes the route appealing is that it follows the course of a former railway, which means that there are gentle gradients all the way.

-Gastronomy. This part of northern Catalonia has cultivated a reputation for innovative cuisine. This spirit is best represented locally by the Cuina Volcanica movement, which uses locally sourced produce and intends to update classic Catalan cuisine with new methods and ideas. Twelve Cuina Volvanica restaurants can be found across La Garrocha, serving dishes like creamy rice with wild mushrooms and onion yoghurt.

-Coast. If you fancy a day on the Mediterranean coast then it’s convenient that some of Catalonia’s best beaches are among the closest to La Garrocha. The Bay of Roses is a long and almost unbroken arc of pristine sandy beaches. At certain spots, not far from Sant Pere Pescador, you’ll be able to find perfect seclusion, while others, like the beach on Roses’ waterfront are more lively, with superb amenities and services.

-Girona. Still mostly surrounded by its medieval walls, this is a lovely city that rewards anyone who explores it on foot. There are fascinating and surprising old features, including arcaded squares, historic gates and a Jewish quarter that is remarkably intact. The two main churches are also must-sees – the Basilica of Sant Feliu has a spire (unique for Spain) and blends baroque and gothic architecture. The Cathedral is also significant for its wide Gothic nave.

Weather in La Garrocha

La Garrocha holiday apartments are in a hilly region, which makes conditions here just a touch cooler than in lower areas. In mid-summer temperatures rise as high as thirty degrees, and drop to the high-teens at night. Summers start in May and last through to late-October. Here the transitional seasons of spring and autumn bring the dampest weather of the year. Daily highs in these seasons are in the upper-teens. Winters are generally moderate, but there are occasional cold snaps bringing sub-zero conditions and occasional snow flurries.

Travel to La Garrocha

The international airport for La Garrocha holiday rentals is Girona Costa Brava (GRO). This is a hub for a number of budget carriers, and gets plenty of services from the UK during the summer. A handful of airlines also serve this airport all year round. The journey to La Garrocha region takes around an hour, and you can get there from the airport with the AP-7, C-66 and A-26. If you don’t have a car then it is possible to catch a TEISA bus from Girona and Barcelona to the town of Olot in La Garrocha.

lovely location - quite and secluded in winter

4 of 5
The atmosphere in the camp site in Winter is very relaxed. The distance from Besalu is about 25 minutes of very pleasant walking. The little house is welcoming and has many good books and videos in English . We enjoyed our stay

- An impressive Pyrenean retreat. Donny, alongside his charming family, made us feel very comfortable throughout. Our beautiful little 'Cherry' apartment, was clean, well-finished, and offered us an unobstructed mountain panorama from our own private garden. We will see you again soon!
