Make a holiday cottage in La Fueva your home away from home

For those in need of wide open spaces, perfect tranquillity, natural beauty and captivating history, a holiday cottage in La Fueva would more than fit the bill. La Fueva holiday homes are in a valley on the southern side of Pyrenees, amid a rocky landscape of limestone hills, dense forest and fast-flowing rivers. In summer it’s an adventure hot spot and in winter the ski resorts of the Pyrenees are easy to get to. La Fueva cottages are charming limestone buildings—quaint country homes with roaring fireplaces in winter and ample space both indoors and out for all the family.

Things to do

-Nature: La Fueva is a river valley with a privileged position, not far from the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, but in a beautiful natural setting of its own. The surrounding topography is unique, with tall and precipitous slopes best exemplified by the Peña Montañesa, an early outcrop of the Pyrenees that stands at 2,300 metres and offers dazzling views of the mountains to the north.

-Heritage: La Fueva has a rich and long history, which has afforded it plenty of monuments. There’s the Troncedo Castle, built in the 11th century and part of a series of fortresses to fend off Moorish attacks. Aínsa is a gorgeous old town still encircled by its medieval walls, and with a warren of cobblestone streets flanked by historic houses to explore. There’s also a catalogue of medieval Romanesque churches to see across the region—Muro de Roda has a fabulous example, which itself is part of a walled enclosure.

-Winter activities: This is a good place to be for both Alpine and Nordic skiing. One of the Spanish Pyrenees’ best resorts is only half an hour away at Cerler. There are 65 runs here, which are mostly blue, red and black. The resort also has a number of restaurants, three ski schools and two hire stores. Cross-country skiiers don’t have to journey as far, as there’s a great Nordic ski centre at Llanos del Hospital, with routes through black pine forest as well as healthy snowfall.

-Summer activities: April to November is the time for hiking, horseback riding, fishing and any of a wide variety of high-adrenaline water sports including rafting and kayaking. Keen walkers are spoiled in La Fueva with both short (PR) and long (GR) footpaths available. The Mariano Path is a favourite, taking in the communities of Barbastro, Costea, El Grado and Torreciudad, with the chance to see medieval heritage and unforgettable natural landscapes.

-Food and drink: The Fueva Valley is known for its fabulous wild mushrooms. Visitors in the region in autumn can try five different varieties, which are often best served fried with olive oil, garlic and seasoned with parsley. The traditional local dish is Chiretas—basically, a lamb’s stomach stuffed with chopped lung, heart, rice and ham. More appealing might be garlic soup, which has slices of bread incorporated into the dish in the classic Spanish rural style.

Weather in La Fueva

The climate around holiday rentals in La Fueva is continental, with warm summers and fresh winters. From May to September temperatures rise to between 22 and 28°C during the day. There’s occasional rainfall throughout the year, particularly in the spring and autumn months, which tend to be mild. Winter temperatures get up to around 10°C in lower-lying areas, while the high ground stays closer to freezing and receives a healthy layer of snow between December and March.

Character house in a lovely part of the Pyrenees

4 of 5
A well renovated older style house with a pleasant terrace for sitting out, in a quiet hill top town. Several popular river swimming spots are nearby and canyonning and white water rafting are available. The house is also ideally located to reach all points of the Ordesa National Park, with superb walks and views.
