Make a holiday rental villa or property in Galicia, Spain your home away from home

Taking a holiday property in Galicia, Europe’s westernmost region, is a unique experience in Spain as the landscape is totally different to any other region, looking more like parts of Ireland than Spain, and cut off from the rest of the country by the towering peaks of its mountain ranges. It is a beautifully wild region of countryside, with wooded valleys and lush meadows standing on top of sharp cliffs and beautiful, sandy beaches. Taking a Galicia villa is ideal for those who want to enjoy Spain at its simplest, most beautiful and authentic, away from tourist crowds, over-development and the staggering heat of Andalucia or Murcia.

Things to do on holiday in Galicia, Spain

Throughout the Galicia region are a whole host of beautiful historic towns and villages which are well worth exploring from any Galicia property, from a Galicia cottage deep in the wild countryside to a villa in Galicia’s main town. The Galicia tourist board has information on the historical importance, cultural interest and tourist attractions of Noia, Muris, Porto do Son, Tui and Ribeira, to name just some of the best.

Many of Galicia’s beaches are almost deserted for much of the year. Even during the heat of the summer, the beaches remain empty and at your disposal if you would like a lazy day on the beach during your stay in a Galicia cottage or villa.

The region is known throughout Spain as the ‘land of 1,000 rivers’, and is a famous region in the fishing world. Galicia carp fishing holidays thrive, and there is nowhere better to be based to explore the many miles of rivers than from a private, self catering Galicia cottage, deep in the famous countryside. The Galicia tourist board will have plenty of information on the best places and licensing requirements for a world class holiday fishing in Galicia.

Galicia properties are the favoured accommodation for hikers as walking in Galicia’s countryside is an unparalleled experience. The countryside is adorned with beautiful fishing villages, romantic viewpoints and historical monuments like the Bridge of Ourense, Tower of Hercules, Tomb of the Apostle Santiago, Santiago de Compostela Cathedral and many Celtic remains. The rich history and strong culture has resulted in Galicia retaining much of its folklore, music and gastronomy, which makes taking a Galicia property a real treat.

Places to visit on holiday in Galicia, Spain

The capital of Galicia, Santiago de Compostela, is the final destination for many people taking pilgrimages to the monumental Cathedral. Many of those who fly into Galicia will arrive into Santiago de Compstela, and it is well worth investigating before leaving the town for your holiday accommodation.

Weather in Galicia, Spain

The weather in Galicia is far more temperate and mild than the climate found in Spain’s more southerly regions. In fact, many holiday makers take a Galicia property in order to avoid the stifling heat associated with the more famous Spanish costas. In summer, temperatures hover around the 25°C mark, whilst in winter, temperatures average around 5°C.

Flights to Galicia, Spain

Despite Galicia’s inaccessible and remote atmosphere, it is actually very easy to reach a Galicia property from the UK due to the location of La Coruna (LCG) and Santiago de Compostela (SCQ) Airports within the region. Clickair and Ryanair provide direct flights from the UK to these airports respectively, making Galicia villas less remote than ever before.

Lovely cottage in a rual setting

4 of 5
This is a delightful cottage, which is well furnished and equipped with everything you might need for your stay. We stayed for 3.5 weeks, and Tony was very good about giving us a discount for the longer stay. The cottage is situated in a hamlet of small holdings and the locals are very friendly (even if your Spanish is very basic!). It is situated about equidistance from Santiago and Coruna, but a car is a definite necessity as most things are a good hour away. (Which is why it is 4 not 5 stars!) Tony and his wife are great hosts, nothing too much trouble and their weekly cleaning was an unexpected bonus.

Nuria our host was fantastic at communicating with us, anything we asked or requested was answered and accomodated very quickly. The apartment itself is in a fantastic location right in the centre of town, for bars, shops and restaurants and is also next to Progeso farmers Market for a morning visit for fresh bread and fruit and veg everyday. The views over the river Vigo towards Cangas were lovely and you could see 360 over the town of Vigo and the surrounding hills itself. The furniture in the apartment was clean and comfortable and the terrace was an amazing space to relax with a nice cold glass of wine in the evening. A lovely apartment and a charming host who made the trip a pleasure and the week very relaxing. Thank you Nuria
