Make a holiday cottage in Esporles your home away from home

Many people argue that to experience the real majorca, you need to leave the beach resorts behind and stay in one of the small inland villages. A village definitely worth considering is Esporles. If you stay in a holiday cottage in Esporle, you’ll be only about 10 miles from the capital, Palma de majorca and also close enough to the ocean for a relaxing day at the beach. At the same time, you get to experience village life in the foothills of the Tramuntana Mountains. Holiday accommodation in Esporles varies from houses to romantic cottages or villas where you can live like royalty. Some properties have their own swimming pools and BBQ facilities. Most have lovely mountain views and all are furnished to meet your needs for a stay on the beautiful holiday island of majorca.

Things to do in Esporles

Esporles once had a flourishing textile industry due to the abundant water supply coming from the surrounding hills. The village is set in a beautiful valley and is a great place to simply kick back and relax.

-Walking the area around Esporles is the ideal opportunity to commune with nature. The stone oak forests beg to be explored from your Esporles holiday cottage and there are many little paths to stroll along. You may also want to try some fishing or swimming in the streams.

-La Granja is a large mansion just outside Esporles. With parts dating from the 10th century, this elegant building started out as a farmhouse built by the Moors. In 1230 the house became a Cisterian monastery, the first monastery on the island. By 1447, it became a private house which, over the centuries, belonged to different noble families. Today it’s a living museum where you can learn more about rural life in majorca. The lush gardens with their little waterfalls are a haven of peace and there is a yew tree that has been standing for around 1,000 years. Don’t eat before you go since you’ll have the opportunity to try cheese, wine, sausages, majorcan donuts and other delectable bites. There is a restaurant too.

-Fiestas and religious events take place in Esporles throughout the year. For example, on 29 June villagers celebrate the town’s patron saint, St Peter, by decorating the streets and having an outdoor supper that includes everyone. When you plan your stay in a holiday villa in Esporles, check the local listings for events that may be taking place and be sure to book your accommodation well in advance.

-Valldemossa is charming village and an interesting day out, being about 4 miles from most holiday homes in Esporles. Some famous artists have stayed here, including the composer Polish composer Frédéric Chopin, French writer George Sand, Nicaragua’s most famous poet Rubén Darío and Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges, who lived here as a boy.

-Bayalbufar is an historic seaside town about 2.5 miles from Esporles. There is a walking trail called the Post Trail that connects the two places if you want to hoof it but you can also get here by car. There are several beaches in the area and the trail from Banyalbufar to the beach at Port d’es Canonge affords spectacular views.

The weather in Esporles

Esporles has a dry, Mediterranean climate. Summer days are long and sunny while in winter it may rain. However, temperatures in this mountainous location are a little lower than in many of majorca’s coastal destinations. In summer the average temperatures reach around 26 °C and can go up to around 30 °C while in winter, they drop to about 4 °C.

Getting to Esporles

Since Esporles is so close to Palma de majorca, it’s very easy to get there. To get to Palma de majorca, you can fly in from any of a large number of European airports or you can take the ferry from Barcelona or other destinations nearby. There are regular buses from Palma to Esporles or you can get to the village by taxi. However, you may find that renting a car and self-driving to your Esporles holiday cottage is the best option since this gives you the freedom to travel all over the island, where you want and when you want.

A lovely rural mountain villa in fantastic country side & forest. Fairly remote however easy to drive to coast or places of interest. That said roads are narrow & twisty not good for a big car or the faint hearted. Esporles nice place. A friendly local helped us find the villa & we found everyone was fine with us "brits" Could be chilly in evenings & clouds often covered mountains to then clear again for sun.

Superb property, beautiful gardens and great outdoor entertaining area near a quite magnificent pool. Unfortunately the cascada wasn't working, to the disappointment of my sons but this in no way detracted from the overall experience. We were a party of 15 of varying ages, we all had a great time, and the layout of the accommodation and the grounds meant that there was always a quiet spot to escape to. Highly reccommended. To enhance further I would suggest a file of information in the Finca to cover what to do in the event of something going wrong, details of local restaurants etc. We've had this in previous properties we have rented and it has been very useful. A recommendation, if you don't fancy cooking one night and are a large party, Caroline from Mallorca Private Cooking with do you a wonderful supper for not much more than the cost of slap up meal out, and she does all the washing up.
