The name Encinas Reales means “Royal Oak” and refers to the ancient oaks which still surround this area. Long ago Queen Isabel the Catholic rested beneath one of the oaks and it became known as the royal oak. The town of Encinas Reales has a lovely centre with graceful architecture and stunning churches. With around 2,500 residents it has all visitors need with small local shops, bars and restaurants and great scenery in the surrounding area.

Granada’s Alhambra Moorish Fortress and Gardens are about an hour’s drive or visit the beautiful city of Seville (Sevilla) 176 km to the west. It has a splendid cathedral, the Torre del Oro and the Alcazar which was formerly a Moorish palace. The city also has some world-class museums and galleries.

Almendrillo captures the magic of rural Spain

Where do you find a unique, private place in southern Spain for six seasoned traveller couples? From our initial research there are not that many! How very fortunate we were to find Almendrillo! This modernized, original estate home is located at the end of a twisting lane a few kilometers from excellant highways. The white stone walls and large, original wooden swing doors open to private comfortable spaces among the well kept grounds and gardens. We were warmly welcomed by a charming knowledgeable off site, though local manager who was available should that be necessary. We also enjoyed the outstanding cuisine cooked "in house" by a most talented, congenial local couple. The views are simple outstanding! Enjoy your morning coffee as the sun comes over distant mountains. Have lunch or afternoon cocktails gazing across the olive grove covered valleys and hills as far as the eye can see. Enjoy the stunning large pool area and recessed patios with uninterupted south facing vistas. In time , relax over dinner under the stars and the fading light of the setting sun. The well equiped kitchen and BBQ, off the enchanting courtyard, make meal preparation a most pleasant experince if so inclined. All needs are provided. Almendrillo was spotlessly clean with comfortable beds and all amenities. The modern bathrooms, showers and laundry facilities were well used by all after our long days and hikes. Anyone for a game of pool, ping pong, cards or just relax in the second floor TV room with an out door patio? With so many isolated spaces one could easily slip away for a quiet read, wi fi exchange or a welcome siesta. The small local village, a short distance away is not only charming, it has a small store for general needs. There is also a lively restaurant with very good food and a most enthusiastic owner. Our goal was to make trips to the numerous historic and cultural sites within an hour and a half or less drive. Almendrillo is ideally located to access the rich cultural history of the region. The white villages and must see cities like Cordoba, Granada and Seville as well as the south coast are spectacular day visits. If south central Spain is is in your travel plans , and it should be, Almendrillo is a "go to" place. I know you will love it too!
