Make a holiday apartment in El Vendrell your home away from home

On HomeAway there’s a selection of holiday homes in El Vendrell, on Catalonia’s Costa Daurada. Here you’ll find a homelike and restful space in a destination that offers something for everyone – if you want fun in the sun then there’s a long sandy beach. If you’re visiting a holiday apartment in El Vendrell for wine and culture, then monasteries, castles, Roman ruins and vineyards are all around. And if it’s a breathless, action-packed getaway that you’re after look no further than the state-of-the-art PortAventura theme park, the adventure of coastal mountain ranges and the thrill of watersports. And in between, the time you spend at your El Vendrell holiday home will be carefree, with comforts like pools and private gardens.

Things to do

-Beaches. Coma-Ruga and Sant Salvador are two fabulous local beaches connected by a boardwalk and backed by a long promenade boasting a handy range of amenities like shops and restaurants. Coma-Ruga is two kilometres-long and more than 100 metres wide, with fine sand next to tranquil waters. Sant Salvador is a little smaller, but no less attractive.

-Culture. Pablo Casals, one of the 20th Century’s best-regarded cellists, was born in El Vendrell, and there’s a museum covering his life and work, housed in what was his home until 1939. The Castle of Castellet is a beautiful landmark just a few kilometres north of the town, while in the nearby mountains are remote hermitages, sanctuaries and an impressive medieval monastery complex in Santes Creus, half an hour away.

-Outdoor recreation. If you fancy getting to know the underwater life just off the coast of El Vendrell then there’s the Aula Aquàtica, which organises expert snorkeling tours, for which no prior experience is necessary. Meanwhile, the list of trails that can be joined from El Vendrell is huge – you could visit Roman quarries, prehistoric houses, centuries old-farmhouses, or simply amble along the seafront.

-Food and drink. The vineyards that make up much of the landscape in this part of Catalonia belong to the acclaimed Penedès wine region, probably best-known for its cava sparkling wine. A great place to buy local produce like wine and olive oil is the cooperativa shop in El Vendrell. If you happen to be in the area in early-spring then wild asparagus can be picked throughout the area, while calçots (large green onions) are a famous Caltalan delicacy at this time of year.

-Tarragona. This city is worth visiting for all kinds of reasons. Lining its Rambla, which commands seafront vistas, are lovely cafes, restaurants and high-street fashion stores. There’s a UNESCO site, with various Roman stone monuments dotted around. And just outside Tarragona is PortAventura, which is one of Europe’s premier theme parks, a thrilling and colourful attraction loaded with brand new rollercoasters and expertly choreographed spectacles.

Weather in El Vendrell

Holidaying at an El Vendrell apartment you’ll get to enjoy Mediterranean conditions. In summer this means beach weather, with daily highs ranging from 25 to 30 degrees between May and October. Being next to the coast the humidity can also be quite high, so loose, airy clothing and sandals is usually the way to go here. The spring and autumn seasons are short, with plenty of warm-ish days, but also a bit more rain. Winters are rarely cold, especially if you’re from Britain, although a northerly wind can make things feel a bit cooler, despite relatively consistent sunshine.

Travel to El Vendrell

Reus (REU) is the airport for holiday accommodation in El Vendrell. This is 40 kilometres (about half an hour by road) west of the town. It’s a busy airport in summer, receiving many flights from Britain, all of which are with charters or budget carriers. The drive to El Vendrell is a simple one – you can just follow the AP-7 coastal highway. There’s also a bus that goes from Reus Airport to the station in El Vendrell, which also has links to Barcelona Airport, about an hour to the northeast.

Relaxing holiday in peaceful location

5 of 5
We had a delightful holiday in this villa. The lovely garden was perfect for relaxing in and it was a bonus that the pool was fenced with two small children. We really enjoyed the area - visiting Barcelona and Tarragona, also spent happy times in Vilanova, Vilafranca (amazing market there on Saturdays) and Sitges.

A lovely apartment in a perfect position

5 of 5
We chose Vilanova because of the easy train access to Barcelona but we fell in love with Vilanova itself. Lovely beaches and old town with a relaxed atmosphere. Just what is needed if you have been sightseeing all day. It seems to have a lot of festivals and things going on during the summer too. The apartment itself is spacious with everything we needed and it is in a great location. We spent early evenings on the balcony taking it easy and watching the world go by before cooking or going out to one of the many restaurants. The owner Sabine is friendly and welcoming. The only small downside was the requirement for a cash deposit in Euros which meant we had a lot of money to exchange on our return to the UK and we lost out on the exchange rates. It would have been nice to stay longer than the week and explore the region a bit more. I guess we will just have to go back for another glorious holiday
