El Tuhillo, 55km along the Spanish coast from the popular resort of Malaga, offers a great alternative to the bustling summer resort. Enjoying access to the same beautiful stretches of beach and with plenty of activities easily accessed from self-catering accommodation, El Tuhillo offers a more relaxing destination, popular with couples and families.
El Tuhillo is a great option for those looking to spend their summer holiday in Nerja, with self-catering accommodation only a short walk to the sandy beach. Here holidaymakers can enjoy a variety of water sports, or simply relax and enjoy the sunshine.
The area around El Tuhillo is somewhat of a walker’s paradise, with fantastic walks along the coast from which to admire the sunrise/sunset, or more challenging hikes up into the mountains of Frigiliana above Nerja.
The town centre of Nerja is just a scenic 7-minute walk from El Tuhillo, and is a great place to spend the day, wandering around the old winding streets, absorbing the ambience of ‘Old World’ Spain.
The town is also awash with options for eating and drinking, with plenty of restaurants and sidewalk cafes offering local tapas dishes and fantastic local wines. Many of these also remain open late into the evening, with Spanish music and dancing to keep visitors entertained into the wee hours.
El Tuhillo also has several shops selling traditional Spanish leather goods, as well as a wide range of handcrafted souvenirs, while a trip into Nerja town centre also offers several high-class boutiques as well as high street fashion shops.
The town of Granada is less than an hour’s drive from El Tuhillo, which lies at the foot of the mountains in the Sierra Nevada National Park, of which beautiful views can be had along the scenic drive to the city. The main draw in the city is the Alhambra, a Moorish citadel which is a significant cultural site within Islamic history, although there are also plenty of other historical palaces and churches likely to be of interest to the visitor.
El Tuhillo experiences typical Mediterranean summers, with long, hot days and very little rain. While temperatures in the summer months regularly hit 25C and above, they remain very mild in the winter months, rarely dipping below 10C, making El Tuhillo a great escape from the bitter British winter. In fact, the autumn months can be a great time to visit, with the Mediterranean waters remaining relatively warm yet with far fewer crowds around the resort.
El Tuhillo is served by Malaga International Airport (AGP), which receives daily flights from numerous airlines, including British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair and several others, with departures from across the UK. Although Malaga Airport is 70km away from El Tuhillo self-catering accommodation, all the major car hire operators can be found in the airport. The use of a car may also be very handy for the remainder of your holiday, as it gives you the opportunity to really get out and see the region.
