Make a holiday apartment in Cornellà de Terri your home away from home

In a Mediterranean region that offers sun and sand, but much more besides, Cornellà de Terri holiday cottages on HomeAway are ideal for families who want real versatility from a holiday. The coast not far away has a seemingly endless series of soft, sandy beaches on one of Spain’s most beautiful bays. In the immediate vicinity to apartments in Cornellà de Terri is picturesque farmland, with vineyards, lakes and lots of atmospheric medieval villages. Cornellà de Terri holiday rentals are rustic stone buildings fitted with the appliances and comforts you’d expect from 21st Century accommodation. Things to do

-Local heritage. Banyoles is nearby and has some interesting medieval sights – in the Vila Nova there’s a typically Catalan arcaded square, and in Vila Vella you can see the handsome 14th Century Santa Maria del Turers church. Beyond Banyoles is Besalú, which has an iconic Romanesque bridge crossing the Flúcia. The centre point is a tall stone gate with battlements.

-Coast. Pals and l’Escala are the two closest beaches, and they’re both sublime. Pals has a four-kilometre sweep of soft, golden sand, augmented by bars, restaurants and a centre offering boat trips to the Illes Medes islands a short way off the coast. L’Escala is at the southern end of the Gulf of Roses, and has a typically attractive sandy beach, but is also the site of an impressive Greco-Roman settlement, still being excavated.

-Recreation. The lake at Banyoles hosted the rowing events for the Barcelona Olympics, and it’s still a great port of call if you’d like to go kayaking, fishing, swimming or take a sightseeing cruise. Three marked trails are available – you could walk the eight-kilometre shoreline of the lake, explore the biodiverse wetlands next to Banyoles or set off on a more demanding hike up to the viewpoint at Puig Clarà.

-Volcanic landscapes. Beyond Banyoles is the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone, the largest area of volcanic terrain in mainland Spain. It’s protected by a natural park, with 40 individual cones and as many as 20 former lava flows. The soil and microclimate supports beautiful green vegetation that you can see along 28 different walking trails. One of the most striking volcanoes is Santa Margarida, 600 metres-high and two kilometres wide.

-Girona. Dating back to Roman times, Girona is a city packed with lots of suprising historical fragments. Two of Spain’s most inspiring gothic buildings are set here – the 11th Century Cathedral with its stunning Tower of Charlemagne, and the collegiate church of Sant Feliu, rare among Spanish churches because it has a spire. The old fortifications are also exciting – you can walk along much of the southern portion, which follow the course of the original Roman walls.

Weather in Cornellà de Terri

If you’d like to include beach trips during your holiday at an apartment in Cornellà de Terri then it would be best to get here between June and September. In these months daily temperatures peak somewhere between 25 and 33 degrees and there’s usually less rainfall than the transitional months of October or May. By November the weather is much milder, with highs of 16 degrees tempered by an occasional cold wind that blows from the north, making it feel a bit chillier.

Travel to Cornellà de Terri

The airport for holiday cottages in Cornellà de Terri is Girona-Costa Brava (GRO). Girona airport is a Spanish base for one major international low-cost airline which guarantees connections to cities throughout Britain. More routes tend to be available to this destination between May and October. By car you can join the AP-7 for 20 minutes, turning off at exit no. 6 and following the C-66 up to Cornellà de Terri in the direction of Banyoles. Most rentals are in the countryside, so a car is usually necessary here.
