Make a holiday apartment in Colunga your home away from home

Colunga apartments are set in a beautiful part of Asturias, where tall, verdant mountains meet the Atlantic Ocean. It's a superb location if you'd like to go for walks and bike rides, or visit one of the natural sandy beaches close by in the summer. Holiday homes in Colunga are charming and rustic in style, with traditional furniture and fittings, and large gardens affording all the breathing space you could need. The coastline next to apartments in Colunga is significant as much for its prehistory as its breathtaking beauty - dinosaur fossils have been discovered in the area, and there's a high-profile museum devoted to Colunga's prehistory.

Things to do

-Beaches. There are five gorgeous beaches in this municipality alone, and many more to be found in either direction along the coast. They are natural here, with green hills and cattle herds in the background. Playa de la Griega in Colunga is 650 metres long and boasts services like showers, restaurants and lifeguard patrol. It's also recommended for its prehistory, as you can follow a path from the east of the beach to cliffs with fossilised dinosaur footprints.

-Attractions. Set on the Dinosaur Coast, which stretches from Gijon in the west to Ribadeslla in the east, Colunga is a real hotbed for prehistoric remains. And for this reason you can find the Asturian Jurrasuic Museum here, the most visited museum in the whole of Asturias. It covers the changes that occurred throughout the Mesozoic era, with particular attention paid to the dinosaurs.

-Gastronomy. Asturias, and this part of the region in particular, is well know for its cider, with large sweeps of the local landscape dominated by apple orchards. If you order "Sidra" at a bar or restaurant it will be poured from a great height into the glass to allow it to breathe. Asturian cheeses also have a strong reputation - and are strong in flavour too. Originating in the mountainous areas a little way south, Cabrales is a blue cheese aged for five months.

-Outdoor recreation. This is an excellent spot for walks, with the ancient Camino de Santiago passing close by the town. The local landscape is one of coastal cliffs and tall green hills. A particularly scenic route is the Ruta Mirador del Fitu Picu Pienzu, which is a four-hour trail, taking you to a spectacular lookout with views of the Picos de Europa in the distance, and a foreground of rugged green hills, home to sheep herds and wild horses.

-Excursions. Half an hour west of Colunga is the city of Gijon, the largest in Asturias. It's well worth coming to see the Roman heritage here, conserved at locations like the Campa de Torres Archaeological site, a fortified settlement, and Campo Valdes, which has a remarkable bathing complex. A little further, to the southwest, is Oviedo, which has a beautiful old town, with palaces, squares, fountains, churches and the splendid gothic Cathedral of San Salvador.

Weather in Colunga

Spain's northern coast gets a maritime climate, with rain distributed evenly throughout the year. Whenever you arrive at your holiday rental in Colunga, the chances are that mild conditions will be on the cards. Summers are moderate, with temperatures that reach the mid-20s and a little less rainfall than in the other damper seasons. Winters meanwhile are never extreme here. They're a little wetter than the other seasons, while temperatures still normally make it up to double figures during the daytime and stay above freezing at night.

Travel to Colunga

The closest international airport to Colunga holiday homes is Asturias (OVD). There are a few year-round links from Britain to this destination, with budget carriers. The airport also handles a lot of domestic connections to cities like Seville, Madrid and Barcelona. Colunga is around 45 minutes from the airport by road - you can simply take the A-8 and keep on it until you reach this municipality. On this part of the Asturian coast it's a good idea to have use of a car, as there aren't many public transport options.

A villa with the real wow factor

5 of 5
When we arrived we were blown away by casa la marina- it was spacious, clean, well equipped and tastefully decorated inside. The garden was so peaceful and tranquil it was a delight. Nieve was a very welcoming host and explained everything so carefully. Despite the rain, we had a great time. Casa La Marina is perfectly situated to visit the beaches, the mountains, the pretty fishing villages as well as large towns such as Oviedo.
